Hotel | "Stopping point near the Bulgarian border"

Quote:
The second of the three-star hotels we stayed in Macedonia was located on the outskirts of the town of Serres, less than an hour from the Bulgarian border, in a good place to break the journey before embarking on the Bulgaria/Romania route. The hotel is a pretty typical three-star, with commensurate facilities and services, but overall I felt Alexander offered fairly good value for the money it charged. The hotel is located a few kilometres away from the centre of town (in fact, there is nothing nearby: a car or use of a taxi is pretty much essential if you stay here) off the main Thessaloniki road, far enough not to suffer from any traffic noise at night. The building stands o...Read More

The ferry journey from Crete back to Gythio by the way of Antikythira and Kythira was less pleasant that the journey outward. The sea was choppy, the tall and narrow ferry was rocking unpleasantly, people were sick and even the sky was clouded over as we were leaving Kissamos. By the time we left Kythira though we were in the shelter of the Peloponnese mainland and it was possible to sit on deck without getting splashed. The sky was again the cloudless blue of the Greek Island summer and the Older Child even spotted some dolphins circling the ferry. We arrived in Gythio in the late afternoon, had a leisurely meal and then, for reasons that still elude me, decided to drive on instead of doi...Read More

We briefly consider stopping near the Mt Olympus, but one can't see everything after all, and we get going.Past the Olympus we are drive along the coastal plain around Katerini and soon arrive on the outskirts of Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki. As much as Greek landscape is often very attractive and smaller towns and villages charmingly rustic, the areas around large Greek cities are invariably, incredibly ugly. I am not sure whether it is in the contrast between the rural quaintness and natural grandeur or whether the power stations, building merchants, wholesalers and petty industrial installations that mushroom around Greek cities are truly obnoxious, but ugly they are. ...Read More

Hotel | "Hotel with a view"

Hotel Oceanis Kavala Photo, Kavala, Greece
Quote:
We stayed in the Oceanis hotel in Kavala for two nights on a busy August weekend (possibly the busiest holiday weekend of the year). We paid 70 Euro per night for a triple room with breakfast, which was a reasonable rate considering the high season but not a fantastic one for a fairly typical three star. We had a fairly spacious room on a high floor (a good thing as the hotel is located in the middle of the city, right over busy streets). The beds were comfortable, the double particularly large, the room, bathroom and the linen clean and the wi-fi and air-conditioning worked fine. The décor of the whole hotel was a little bit dated, but nothing that would put me off in a big wa...Read More

Attraction | "Wooded mountain at the top of Greece"

As we drive up from the humid heat of Serres (it's one of the more humid areas of Greece which makes the temperatures, generally not as high as in the south, harder to bear), the temperature seems to drop and the air gets fresher with every hairpin bend in the road. It's less than 25 kilometres, but it takes good forty minutes as the road climbs up to 1,500m above the sea level. The views are pretty good, with a vast sandstone gorge meandering on the left of the road and the massif of Vrontous on the left and in front of us. When we arrive at the Lailias Resort – an old mountain refuge refurbished into a budget hotel – the change is staggering. Instead of heavy 35+ degrees the temperature ...Read More

Hotel | "Relaxed hospitality on a cool mountain"

Lailias Mount Resort Photo, Serres, Macedonia

Mount Lailias Ski Resort is an old mountain refuge refurbished into a two-star hotel which still maintains some of the refuge style and spirit. It is located at 1500m above the sea level, 25km along and up a windy but good quality road from Serres, on the slopes of Mt Vrountous whose peak raises above the hotel. The accommodation provided is comfortable in several rooms - our had wooden floors and a modern, tiled en suite bathroom. The beds have soft duvets and there are heaters and radiators for the winter: it is a Ski Resort after all, with a short but noticeable seasons of about two months of snow in the winter. The hotel is family run, and the atmosphere is friendly, relax...Read More
