Always keen to try a local beer when travelling we didn’t hesitate to step into Hallstatt’s Braugasthof; as it turned out it’s not a brewery tap or even a beer-hall but we did enjoy a tasty lunch and as it was starting to rain quite heavily, it made a useful and timely stop. This hotel and restaurant boasts one of the best positions in the village, on the road that winds along the lakeside. It has a small terrace on the other side of the road right on the water’s edge but this was closed on the September day we visited as the rain was pretty constant. From the terrace the views across the lake are wonderful; it really is a scenic spot. The building itself is well maintained and is notable...Read More

Hausbrauerei Peterwirt is surely one of Bad Mitterndorf’s best kept secrets. We had read about it on the net but couldn’t find it when we got there. We asked in our hotel but nobody had heard of it and it was not among the restaurants and other entertainment listed on the notice-board in the centre of the village. On our last day in the village we set out to find it. I’m pleased to be able to report that we did find it. The brewery and the brewery tap are housed in a fairly large building, which was formerly an agricultural unit (what is now the bar is where the calves would sleep and the cold storage was a pigsty) just behind the lovely house, where they also take in paying guests. As we ...Read More

Situated about halfway between Salzburg and Graz, Bad Mitterndorf is a winter sports resort in the foothills of Grimming and nestling just below the Tauplitz plateau, a favourite destination of 'pasture skiers'. In summer hikers and cyclists come and the beautiful lakes are a perfect temperature for bathing. The town is on a mainline between Salzburg and Stainach (from where you can change for a train to Graz). The airports of Graz, Salzburg, Linz and Klagenfurt are less than a two hour drive away. The permanent population of Bad Mitterndorf is around three thousand but there are lots of hotel rooms and also numerous holiday homes and apartments in the locality. It doesn't take ...Read More

Eselalm is what’s known in Austria as a ‘hütte’. It doesn’t seem right to describe a hütte as a hut but that’s really what it is: a countryside inn serving food and refreshments in a very simple building. We chanced upon Eselalm when walking back from the little village of Obersdorf to Bad Mitterndorf where we were staying. This region is the southern part of the Salzkammergut, about halfway between Salzburg and Graz, and a couple of miles from the very pretty town of Bad Aussee. There are several of these ‘hütte’ in the area and they are advertised on a notice board in the centre of Bad Mitterndorf along with the opening times and information about the entertainment that some of them provi...Read More

There are three salt mines in the vicinity of Salzburg that are open as tourist attractions. We visited the one at Hallstatt. The town is situated on the Hallstatter See and if you’re coming by public transport you’ll get off the train at the tiny station on the opposite side of the lake and hop on the little boat which ferries you to the town.We followed the signposts to the funicular and bought our tickets at the ticket office. If you’re visiting the salt mines the price includes a return ride on the funicular and you need to scan the barcode of your ticket as you enter the funicular car so don’t discard your ticket after the tour (unless you don’t mind walking back to town). The funicul...Read More

Bad Mitterndorf isn't the sort of place I'd envisaged staying in because neither of us drive but public transport provision is surprisingly good and we had no problems getting to and from Bad Mitterndorf and in exploring the region. Coming by car Bad Mitterndorf is about halfway between Salzburg and Graz and either of those airports (or even the one at Linz) would be a good place to fly into. We came by train from Salzburg, a journey of about three hours (though driving directly from Salzburg would take much less time) - and one of the most beautiful train rides I've ever had the pleasure of taking. Apparthotel Montana is situated about ten minutes walk from the train station which is on t...Read More
