Lake Manyara National Park was one of the smallest that we visited during our 12 day safari. It was scheduled as our transition stop between Kenya and the Serengeti given the vast distance we had to drive on that day. While we were originally scheduled for a three hour game drive here, it was all we could do in getting just about two hours because of that long drive in from Amboseli (Kenya). We arrived at the park entrance around 4:00pm, and were immediately welcomed by baboons everywhere! They were in the parking lot at the visitors center (where our driver had to pay the admission fees); the sidewalks around the exhibit area and later we saw them throughout the park. If you were to as...Read More

Ngonorgoro Conservation Area is comprised of the crater floor of an extinct volcano along with the surrounding land around the crater's rim. It is here that many Maasai have been relocated by the government in order to create the Serengeti National Park. As such, they are permitted to descend the crater rim to the floor in order to provide food and water to their livestock (mostly cows and goats). The Maasai also attempt to earn a living from the tourism trade through the sale of their crafts including beaded jewelry and wood carvings. You can also find them along the road through the area in attract visitors to come take their photos . . . for a price. Yes the American Greenback is hig...Read More

We spent two nights in the Serengeti, providing ample time for game drives to view the wildlife in this wonderful national park. Admittedly, with the size of the Serengeti National Park (5,700 square miles) it is probably impossible to get to all areas in just a couple of days. Our Tanzanian driver Goodwin did a good job in providing us with a nice sampling of what there is to see there. Our first game drive was actually during the drive from Lake Manyara via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The next day, we spent the full morning that included a boxed lunch rather than returning after a short two hour drive. That afternoon there was a late day game drive, but some in our group opted t...Read More

Lake Manyara was our transitional day to Tanzania from Kenya. After a very long drive from Amboseli National Park (Kenya) we met our new driver at the Kenyan/Tanzanian border. Alas, with another scheduling snafu by our Kenya tour provider, it was clear we had no way of making it to Lake Manyara Serena Lodge in time for lunch as scheduled. Our Tanzanian driver Goodwin made a call to make arrangements to have us dine at the Serena Lodge chain's property in Arusha. I suppose it mattered little to them if we had lunch at Lake Manyara or at their Arusha property.Upon a noontime arrival, we were graciously seated in the elegant dining room of the Arusha Mountain Village. I must admit to fee...Read More

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge sits high atop the crater rim overlooking the extinct volcano's floor. In an wildlife oasis known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this Sopa Lodge property has a wonderful view when the skies are clear. As lovely as the sunset was, we could see nothing the next morning in the dense fog. I feel we were very fortunate to have such clear skies the day before for our descent inside the rim for our full day of game viewing. Our accommodations here were like those at the Serengeti Sopa in that all rooms had two double beds. It was nice to have that much room for sleeping. The bathroom was also very spacious with plenty of room in the shower too. The only disapp...Read More

The Serengeti Sopa was the first of two Sopa properties that we would be staying at during the Tanzanian portion of our safari adventure. With two nights scheduled here, we found this to be a wonderful lodge with a high detail to comfort and service. The lodge itself reminded me a lot of the architecture found in America's Southwest, much like the adobe style found in Arizona and New Mexico. The rooms were very spacious with double beds and a huge bathroom. I really loved everything about our accommodations, including the balcony overlooking the vastness that is the Serengeti.Amenities here included a swimming pool, gift shop and lounge. It was also the first place that we h...Read More
