I worked with a Kenyan safari tour operator to put together this 12 day/11 night safari that included a majority of time in Kenya. A separate journal and trip report on the Tanzanian component of this safari adventure will be written as well. Additionally, a separate review will be written on the tour operator. For this trip, I was accompanied by my friend Jane, along with her sister-in-law and her spouse. The four of us got along very well throughout the 12 days, in spite of what was an apparent difference in focus and interests. All accommodations were double occupancy in order to keep expenses down, so that meant Jane and I had to have a basic sense of comfort with one another in ord...Read More

The Mara Simba Lodge was our first safari accommodation and a welcomed oasis after a very long drive on a terrible road from Nairobi. To be fair, the road was only terrible from Arusha, but who's going to be picky?Like each of the subsequent lodges, we were greeted by a friendly staff offering warm face clothes and a glass of fresh juice. It was very refreshing and especially nice to get the road dirt wiped off our faces. With the staff taking our bags to our respective rooms, we headed over to the open-air restaurant. We arrived at the Mara Simba near the end of the lunch service, which was provided buffet style. The choices were plentiful and served at the appropriate temp...Read More

When planning for this safari adventure, I had several people advise that we owed it to ourselves to utilize a tented lodge at least once during our trip. The Sarova Mara was the first of two such camps that we utilized during our 12 day adventure. We were not disappointed. In calling these "tent accommodations" the analogy to camping in tents on the ground is completely lost. While the "room" is a tent, that is about the only similarity. They are built up on platforms and inside, we had (twin) beds and running water so there was no real roughing it that came with camping in a tent in the Mara. The living space was tighter (as you can see in the photo attached to this review)...Read More

The Lake Nakuru Lodge came as day four on our safari journey and after a very long drive from the Maasai Mara on those same crummy roads I've previously mentioned in my review of the Mara Simba. That is somewhat unfortunate for the Lake Nakuru Lodge as I believe it had an effect on the overall perception and satisfaction here. The lodge itself has a great location with a lovely view that afforded us zebras on more than one occasion. The rooms, however, were a bit dated and in needs of upgrades in bedding and linens. It also felt cramped, with the twin beds pushed together and little room on either side to navigate round them. I also found it a bit challenging with my large duffle bag gi...Read More

After the bland experience at the Lake Nakuru Lodge, arriving here at the Ol Tukai Lodge for two nights was a blessing. Sure we once again had a very long drive between game parks on some terrible roads, but arriving here at Amboseli National Park was wonderful. Our arrival had been delayed by a somewhat minor breakdown of our vehicle. En route, the metal shield that protects the gas tank broke loose, creating a terrible rattle underneath the truck. Our driver stopped to tie it up but the first fix didn't hold, so he had to stop a second time and drive much slower after that stop in order to prevent it from breaking completely off.In spite of being more than 30 minutes past t...Read More

After ten nights on safari, our final night at the Voyager Ziwani was a welcomed spot for a relaxing evening, breathtaking sunset and a hippo serenade. Yet another long drive, this time returning from our four days in Tanzania, some in our group were unable to continue on for the last afternoon game drive. Two of us, however, were troopers and went out for the scheduled two hour trip while the other two stayed back and enjoyed showers and a rest in camp. This was the second of our tented camp experiences and was equally luxurious to all the other accommodations we had enjoyed throughout our entire safari. Jane being a bit of a wine connoisseur, found their selections to be outstanding, a...Read More

The Kenyan Game Parks - Maasai Mara

During our safari we were able to experience four of Kenya's more well known game parks: Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli and Tsavo West. Each was very different from the others, and even within a single park, there were significant differences in the landscape, flora and fauna. Each was special in its own way and worthy of a visit irrespective of time spent at any of the other parks. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is known as home of the Greatest Show on Earth - the migration of wildebeest from Tanzania to Kenya to include the crossing of the world famous, croc invested Mara River. We started our safari adventure here with three nights . . . allowing for two full days of exploratio...Read More

I made initial contact with several tour operators including MICS back in December 2009 for a summer 2011 safari. Initial plans were for a small private group of two to four people to take approximately 10 days in Kenya for a safari adventure.MICS’ sales rep Peter was very responsive to all of my communications in the planning process which required a degree of flexibility given that our group size increased to six at one point, and Tanzania was later added to the travel itinerary. Eventually we settled in at four of us doing a 12 day/11 night safari that included both Kenya and Tanzania. The price quoted us was the most reasonable of all tour companies considered, by more than $1,000. ...Read More

The biggest scheduling problem however, was on our last day’s schedule. We were supposed to have a morning game drive in Tsavo West, as we worked our way out the north gate where we were scheduled for lunch. We would then continue on to Nairobi and to Carnivore for a 6:00pm dinner reservation. It was clear after our arrivals into Nairobi, that there was not enough time to have dinner at 6:00pm and make it to the airport in time for our scheduled airline departures. In discussing this situation with Bedan, he also agreed that it was not possible. He then discussed the situation by phone with Peter, who said he would work out the logistics with the driver who would be with us for our last couple of...Read More
