Story/Tip

Las Vegas has never appealed to me as a destination in its own right...it never stole my soul like Rome...or my heart like Paris...or mind like New York. In fact the sole reason for passing through was it proximity to the main reason for my trip. When I lived in the USA there were two places I wanted to visit and never had the chance...both are iconic of the US - New York and the Grand Canyon. I had the oppportunity with my studies to go to New York, but I concluded work or studies were never going to fund a trip to the Grand Canyon. So I planned a trip...and the nearest 'large' airport where I could get a well-priced ticket to was Las Vegas. Oh well I thought...Vegas is suppos...Read More

Hotel | "Off strip so perfect to get over jet lag"

I stayed here for two nights right at the beginning of my trip...so to be honest I was a bit jet lagged and not yet adjusted to the time zone.I took a shuttle from the airport and it was about 9pm when I arrived at the hotel. The reception desk is right at the main door so you don't have to fight through the casino to get there. The lady on the desk was pleasant and was helpful as I had two different bookings for rooms, one for each night, and so she arranged for me to stay just in the one room. But this was Labor Day weekend so the next statement didn't thrill me...a smoking room...but to be honest I was too tired to care. She said she could change me the next day but I said let me try it...Read More

This does have that chain feeling...and so it well named as a factory...there is a clear production feel. I managed to eat here twice as I just got tired and happened to be near by, but the meal and service on both occasions were significantly different. My first visit was on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, and Vegas was crazy busy. I was also struggling to adjust to the time change, so had been up in the early hours having breakfast, and so I arrived looking for lunch just as the Cheesecake was opening up to serve lunch, with no queue for food which was good as I was starving.I had a really lovely server, who helped me navigate the huge menu...there are just too many items. It seems that every hotel on the Strip has to open a burger joint...and this one is in the shops between Mandalay Bay and Luxor. I arrived just before 7pm, and if I had wanted to eat at the bar I didn't need to wait. But the bar was pretty full with a lot of people waiting to be seated at a table...so I chose to wait for a table, and was told it would be 10 minutes.Hung around waiting, wandered across to Lush across the way and purchased some nice bath stuff for later on. I got my table and looked at the menu. The menu is basically burgers. There are some on the menu already designed for you or you can build your own up with the selections on offer. You can choose the type of burger, the b...Read More

Hotel | "Less than perfect"

We stayed here one night. We arrived here from Zion National Park, feeling hot and sticky, but it took a long time to sort out check-in. The place was booked out, not a spare room apparently to be had...and so we ended up with rooms all over the complex. Its quite a large hotel with courtyards separating different wings, and this makes it a less than ideal hotel in terms of being accessible, with steps in places not helping either. The room I got was okay - it had a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. The decor was a little dark, until I went into the bathroom which had an orange shower curtain, which was just too much first thing in the morning. There was a large spa bath...but it looked a...Read More

On trying to pick a hotel to stay in several factors came into play - I wanted to stay on the Strip just for the experience, my budget was small, and I wasn't really interested in staying in one of the mega-resorts. So given a very good offer, as well as the knowledge of a recent renovation, my pick was the Tropicana.I arrived about 9am, and the bell-hop was on me as soon as the taxi arrived and it was clear I had luggage, he check-in my luggage. Now there was no way on a Sunday morning I was going to be able to check in early, especially as their had been a major fight at the MGM Grand next door on Saturday, so I headed out shopping instead, arriving back about 2.30pm, when check-in was q...Read More
