Attraction | "My favourite museum in Helsinki"

The final museum that I visited while in Helsinki was the National Museum of Finland. The museum is relatively easy to get to and only about a 15 minute walk from the train station. Behind the Kiasma museum is a main road and to get to the National Museum of Finland all you need to do is walk about half way down that road and it is on the left hand side. The museum is also within walking distance of the Rock Church so it might be a good idea to do both of these attractions on the same day. Something that I noticed about Helsinki is that although you have to pay to get into museums, they aren’t too expensive. This museum charges adults 8 euros to get in and photography is allowed which was ...Read More

Tuomiokirkko - Lutheran Cathedral

Attraction | "Stunning cathedral!"

Tuomiokirkko - Lutheran Cathedral Photo, Helsinki, Finland

The Lutheran Cathedral in Helsinki was not something I even knew about when I visited the city. When my sister and I were walking around, we could see the top of it from the main part of the city so headed towards it so that we could see what it was. As we got closer, we could see that it was a massive cathedral and seeing as I love looking at them, I wanted to get as close as possible. After the Russians took over control of Helsinki and most of the city was destroyed in a fire, a new town square was made and this became Senate Square, the home of the cathedral. It was not a Russian or Finnish architect that designed this cathedral but German, Carl Ludvig Engel, even though Finland was fa...Read More

Attraction | "Learn about the natural history of Finland"

Natural History Museum (Luonnontieteellinen Museo) Photo, Helsinki, Finland

Another of the museums that I visited while in Helsinki was the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Even when looking at a map, my sister and I found this museum a little hard to find. It is in central Helsinki but it is a little walk away from the main train station. The street names are really confusing on a map but we did end up finding it eventually and after knowing our way back, it was only a 10 minute walk away. As you enter the museum you cannot miss the huge taxidermed elephant in the lobby. This takes up a hell of a lot of space but it is positioned near the stairs so you are still able to get to the ticket desk and to the shop. If you don’t want to tackle the daunting looking sta...Read More

Attraction | "Kiasma - a contemporary art museum"

Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art Photo, Helsinki, Finland

Museums were a big attraction to my sister and I when we visited Helsinki. There are plenty to choose from in Helsinki so you will always have a lot to do and for little cost. One that we did visit was the Museum of Contemporary Art or better known to locals as Kiasma. When it comes to location, this is a museum that couldn’t get any more central. From the main train station, if you are standing directly in front of it facing forward, all you need to do is head right and then turn right at the first chance you get. The building is massive and made completely out of glass so it would be extremely hard to miss. As we visited in the middle of summer, the sun does glare on the glass and gives ...Read More

Temppeliaukio Church

Attraction | "A church made out of rock"

Temppeliaukio Church Photo, Helsinki, Finland
Quote:
When it came to visiting Helsinki, everywhere we looked kept going on about a church made out of rock so we decided to add this to our list of things to see while we were there. The church is actually called Temppeliaukio Church and is a Lutheran church. It was designed by Timo Suomalainen and Tuomo Suomalainen and the church opened in 1969 so it really isn’t very old. Instead of just being a tourist attraction, this is a working church so you can only visit and certain times if you aren’t attending a service. A 15 minute walk from the main train station means that the church isn’t very far away but it is a bit of a pain to get to if you don’t know Helsinki well at all. My sister and I got...Read More
