Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport

Attraction | "Strangest airport ever"

Arriving in Tallinn was quite the experience. As the plane began to descend and I looked out of the window, I saw a massive building with lovely looking glass panels for the roof and in comparison to East Midlands Airport, I thought I was about to get off the plane to a really nice airport. I was wrong. It wasn’t until I stepped foot in the airport that I realised that I had been transported back to the 1970s. The whole airport was a weird mixture of brown and beige and it was not a pretty sight at all. On the way to luggage claim, all I could see was horrible looking dark brown chairs and benches. The whole airport looked miserable and old and in dire need of updating. When I finally got ...Read More

Tallinn Town Hall/Town Hall Square

Attraction | "Town Hall Square"

Quote:
Town Hall Square in Tallinn is quite obviously right beside the city’s Town Hall (otherwise it would be named very strangely). The square’s actual name though is Raekoja Plats, which is mainly used by locals and not tourists. The square itself can be found right in the middle of Old Town and is extremely hard to miss. Around the edges of Raekoja Plats are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants. While visiting Tallinn, my sister and I tended to eat at places wherever we got hungry so unfortunately, we didn’t get to experience the food or drinks in any of these wonderful looking places. Luckily for them, that didn’t seem to be the case for many other tourists. Each restaurant or café window t...Read More

During my time in Tallinn, I stayed at two hotels. The first one was more in the main part of the city centre but the hotel I stayed in after going to Finland and coming back was a close walk from Old Town. Until my sister and started walking the first morning from our hotel, we didn’t even really realise that there were two completely different parts to the city. After walking around the modern part, we were a bit disappointed that there wasn’t more to see and learn about the history of Estonia and the city – how very wrong we were. You know immediately as you enter Old Town. We came in from the side where Toompea Hill is and this was obviously the first thing we saw mainly because you ca...Read More

Toompea Hill & Castle

Attraction | "Discover Toompea Hill!"

Toompea Hill was not exactly a point of interest to me when I visited Tallinn. However, it is pretty hard to miss when you are walking around Old Town and it was on the way from our hotel. As you approach the hill, it is hard to not have your breath taken away by the medieval buildings. Just looking at what there is on this hill transports you back to a completely different time. The hill itself is situated in the western part of the city and can be seen from pretty much anywhere. The main thing I saw while looking up Toompea from the bottom was the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which was something that I wanted to go and see anyway. The cathedral was built during the very late 1800s when th...Read More

Restaurant | "Amarillo Tallinn"

On our first night in Tallinn, my sister and I were starving after travelling for so long. Her being a vegetarian made it quite difficult when it came to choosing restaurants and the Tallinn Amarillo Restaurant was the first we came across that we could both eat at. The restaurant is part of a large chain (we saw others in Helsinki, Finland) and is situated in the centre of the city, close to a large park. The views if you sat outside were lovely especially with a slight sunset at this time. We arrived at the restaurant at around 8pm and it was very busy. So busy that we had to sit in the bar instead of in the main restaurant. We were told that it was fine for us to eat in the bar but beca...Read More
