To round off our last minute trip to London we wanted to go to the theatre, but we didn't want to spend a lot of money. So I had a look online for some deals and found tickets for this play for £10 each, which I thought was a bargain. I had heard of a similar play and thought it would at very least be a bit of fun. We got the underground to Angel in Islington and walked for about 15 minutes before finding the New Red Lion, which is just a pub. We could choose our own seats and it was very informal, which we liked and we got a table right near the front. We could order food, which looked really good, but we had already eaten so didn't bother. The bar was open and drinks were reasonably pric...Read More

So my previous review in this journal was about Trafalgar Square and if you had a look at the photos you would see that it was a gloriously sunny day. We were a bit hot and bothered and on our way from Trafalgar Square we decided to head to St James's Park and cool off by the lake.St James's Park is bounded by Buckinham Palace to the west, St. James Palace and the Mall to the North and the Horse Guards to the east. All of these things are well worth a visit if you have time, but we really didn't. What I really like about all of the parks in London is that they are right slap bang in the middle of the city and most of them have been there for a long time. St. James's is the oldest of the Ro...Read More

A visit to London isn't complete without a trip to Trafalgar Square. Gone are the days when you are mobbed by dirty pigeons, (in fact I didn't notice any on this occassion) since feeding them was banned it seems there are fewer around. The Square itself is found in central London and is small enough to wander around on foot. At it's centre is Nelson's Column, which is a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The square itself is named after this battle, which was a British Naval victory during the Napoleonic Wars. Around the base are 4 lions that lots of people have their photo taken at, including my partner in crime on this trip. The square really i...Read More

Attraction | "Cupcakes Galore!"

I have already reviewed Covent Garden as a whole, but one of the main reasons that I wanted to visit there was to go to this cupcake shop. I had seen a tv program earlier in the year about baking presented by the owner of this shop, Lorraine Pascale. I had been very impressed with the program and Lorraine's baking skills so was really looking forward to trying some cupcakes.I had looked at the shop's website prior to visiting so was aware of how expensive (as compared to Yorkshire prices) the cupcakes were. They range from £2 for the normal cakes up to £2.75 for the couture cakes, so they are hardly going to break the bank.We arrived at Covent Garden and wandered through, findi...Read More

Attraction | "Another market....but totally different!"

So on our little jaunt down to London, we visited Camden market but we also came here to Covent Garden. The two places are only a short tube ride away from each other, (or a slightly longer walk), yet they couldn't be more different. Where Camden is quirky and offbeat, Covent Garden is better described as upmarket and eccentric. There are still a wide range of stalls and eating area, but not the madness of Camden. That isn't a criticism of either place, as we enjoyed both, but they do offer completely different things. Now if you are an eccentric couple like us, you may well love both areas, like we did, then again you may prefer one over the other. Covent garden market & piazza was or...Read More

It was a lovely sunny day when we visited Camden Markets. Having just come from Covent Garden the difference between the two places was a little off putting to start with. Camden is loud, brash, quirky and everywhere you look you see something different. That isn't to say that it isn't amazing and we had a fab time.We arrived on the underground, having taken the northern line to Camden. It was really very busy when we arrived and I took care to have my valuables securely held and out of sight. However, I didn't ever feel vulnerable or in danger, there was almost a carnival atmosphere in the air. We wandered down the highstreet where there a loads of quirky shops, catering for every possibl...Read More

Hotel | "Expensive Luxury near the station"

I stayed here with my other half for one Saturday night in September this year. It was part of a work trip and so the hotel had been booked for me mainly for it's proximity to St Pancras Station, which I would be using the next morning. I booked the hotel through a 3rd party website and got bed and breakfast for £142, which I didn't think was too bad seeing as this was the centre of London and the hotel has 4 stars. We arrived very early in the day, in fact too early to check in. The staff were wonderfully courteous and helpful and registered us, saying we could come back and check in later on that afternoon, but there was no rush. We were allowed to leave our bags in their secure luggage s...Read More
