I’ll never forget first seeing Ljubljana’s Kongresni trg. It’s not the grandest of European squares, though it is lined with some handsome buildings, and a busy road passes along one side of it (Slovenska cesta), but there’s still something quite appealing in its understated baroque charm. It was February 2004 and the snow was piled up at the pavement edges; I had just arrived in the city and was making my way on foot from the train station to the tiny apartment my partner I were going to stay in. People were wrapped up in warm layers, their heads down as they made their way up Slovenska cesta as quickly as possible, heading for somewhere warm. Then we hit Kongresni trg: the lawns in the ...Read More

Town Square (Mestni Trg) Photo, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Quote:
Mestni trg is the central one of three squares in Ljubljana's Old Town which are linked by a largely pedestrianised street, making the area a lovely place to stroll. The name translates as 'town square' and, with the Magistrat, or town hall, located here this was once the very heart of the city. Although there are some pointers as to the true age of Mestni trg, an earthquake in 1511 caused most of the buildings to be destroyed and so the square was rebuilt; what is there today dates mainly from the Baroque period. Crossing the Triple Bridge from Presernov trg and walking straight ahead you'll come directly to Mestni trg. It's not a grand square that commands instant awe, it's rather modest...Read More

Robba Fountain

Attraction | "A Tale of Three Rivers"

Unlike, say, Rome's Trevi Fountain that tourists make a point of going to see, Ljubljana's Robba Fountain is something visits to the Slovenian capital stumble upon as they explore the city's old town. The Robba Fountain is on Mestni trg which roughly translates as 'Town Square' though 'place' is probably a better description for many of Slovenia's so-called squares because it's really a widening of the main street passing through the old town rather than a grand square. Here on Mestni trg you'll find the old town hall ('Magistrat') and numerous houses that are officially declared historically significant either because they are architecturally noteworthy or because some worthy person or ot...Read More

Vodnik Square (Vodnikov trg)

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Vital Vodnikov trg"

Quote:
Strictly speaking Vodnikov trg stretches from the Dragon Bridge to The Triple Bridge and includes the markets and the cathedral church of St. Nicholas but a road coming through the old town and passing through Mestni trg on its way to the east of the city cuts through Vodnikov trg and appears to truncate the square making it look as if the square is just the smaller paved section at the foot of the funicular though this is more correctly Krekov trg. The square is named for Valentin Vodnikov, a Slovene priest, poet and writer from the late Slovenian Enlightenment period; there’s a statue of him (completed in 1889) on the square. He was born in Siska, then a small village, but now essentiall...Read More

Visitors to Ljubljana will find themselves crossing Presernov trg many times over the course of even the shortest stay. The square stands at the place where the old town meets new Ljubljana and is a popular meeting place and the focus for various events during the year. It also contains some of the city's most striking art nouveau buildings.Although Presernov trg is now almost entirely traffic free you can see that it used to be a road junction; since traffic was banned a couple of years ago and lengthy works started on nearby Kongresni trg (to my mind one of the nicest square in the city, especially in winter), Presernov trg has become the heartbeat of the city. The square is n...Read More
