Apparently the shortest "official" mountain range in Europe, the High Tatras (Vysoke Tatry in Slovak) form the natural border between Poland and Slovakia (historically, between Poland and Hungary), with about two-thirds of the High Tatras, and most of the highest peaks, located in Slovakia (the best lakes are on the Polish side, though). The wider term Tatras usually includes in addition to the High Tatras, the Western Tatras, and White Tatras, but not the separate mountain range of Low Tatras further south in Slovakia. The people inhabiting the mountain foothills on both sides, however, share a lot of the same culture, and the Polish Gorale (Highlander) dialect is even more similar to the...Read More

Attraction | "Busy Lake"

Strbske Pleso Lake Photo, Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia
Quote:
Strbske pleso (Strba Lake) is a large tarn located at the altitude of 1335m as well as the resort settlement that has grown around the lake since its "discovery" for tourism and recreation in the second half of the 19th century. It is the highest located settlement in Slovakia as well as the highest (and the westernmost) of the main resorts in Vysoke Tatry.Strbske Pleso, like the other Slovakian Tatra resorts (Smokovce, Lomnica Tatranska etc.) is very busy in the high summer and winter season and still quite busy even out of season. Like the other Tatra resorts it has been somewhat artificially created, initially as a spa, and thus it's not strictly speaking a village, more a ...Read More

Popradske Pleso (Poprad Lake) is a mountain tarn located nearby the High Tatra resort of Strbske Pleso. It lies in the lower part of the Zlomisková dolina, part of the major Tatra valley of Mengusovská dolina, at the altitude of 1494m. The lake has an of over 6ha and is around 17m deep. The water in the lake is green in colour and has a temperature that doesn't exceed 16 degrees. The lake is surrounded by Tatra peaks, including the Poprad Ridge (Popradski Hreben), Fortress Ridge (Hreben Bast) and Ostrva. Popradske Pleso is a popular destination for walks, easily accessible either on Tatra Magistrala from Strbske Pleso resort (approximately 1h 15min) or on the blue marked trial that follows a tarmac ...Read More

Cable-ways of Slovakian High Tatras

Tourist cable-ways that operate all year round (as opposed to winter-only ski lifts) are situated in three locations the Slovakian High Tatras, one for each of the main resorts that are strung on the Cesta Svobody between Strbskie Pleso and Tatranska Lomnica.**Strbskie Pleso boasts a chair lift up the slope of Solisko mountain to Chata Pod Soliskom. This lift covers an altitude difference of 430m, travelling from the altitude of 1386m to 1814m. The adult return ticket cost 10 Euro at the time of writing (2011). The chairlift trip is very enjoyable, especially further up as the cable climbs more steeply and above the tree line. The Chata Pod Soliskom mountain hostel offers refreshments, as ...Read More

Attraction | "Steep, Short and Very Rewarding"

Predne Solisko Photo, Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia
Quote:
The easiest and fastest way to climb the minor summit (and a fabulous viewpoint) of Predne Solisko is to take a chair lift from nearby the sports area of Strbskie Pleso. The lift takes you up a significant proportion of the mountain, saving about 500m of ascent and leaves just the final, steep but short climb to tackle. The climb nominally takes 45 minutes, which obviously depends largely on the fitness level and age of the climber, but in good weather should be doable by any person with an average level of fitness or a child from about four years old. It's steep, so having hiking boots would mean that descent would be easier, but there should be no problems on a dry day for a fitter pers...Read More

Stormy Peaks

The storm's passing by Photo, Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia

Having spent more than 24 hours in the car and crossing five countries in a space of four days we needed some way to reconnect with our own bodies and the basics of the physical world. We thus stopped in the Slovakian High Tatras and decided to take a high-altitude walk along an easy three mile stretch of Tatranska Magistrala ("Tatra Trunk-road"), a 30-mile long walking trail crossing the mountain range from west to east. **We park at Stary Smokovec, an old Tatra spa and resort that boasts a funicular which saves about an hour of the most boring ascent from the resort to the starting point of many walks. The ride is brief and unexciting, but we emerge closer to the high country...Read More

Hotel | "Great food, good value room in the Tatras"

Limba Penzion Photo, Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia
Quote:
Limba Pension is a roadside inn located on the edge of the High Tatras region, a kilometre before the Tatranska Kotlina resort village. We spent four days there in August 2011 and can recommend it wholeheartedly as a place to stay and/or for excellent and very good value food. We had a family room which consisted of a spacious main room with a double bed, a sitting area with three bucket armchairs and a small table, some cupboard space and a balcony with a stunning view of Lomnica peak (the second highest mountain in the Tatras). To the side of the room, ladder-like but comfortable enough steps led to a mezzanine level just under the roof with a Velux window which contained two single low ...Read More
