Attraction | "A wonderful place for a meeting!"

Being based down in the marina of Hyeres there really weren't many places to hold a meeting, this venue was the only option. Luckily I was staying close by, but even if you were up in the old town of Hyeres there was a (quite infrequent) bus service. The island itself is only 4km long and 2.5km wide, so could easily be walked around during the day. However, it's not only one of the smallest islands it is also one of the most mountainous and described as the wildest. I was staying in this hotel found in the Port area of Hyeres for a week long conference. All I can say is I am glad that work was paying, because I thought that for what I got it was expensive. I paid €400 for 6 nights stay, which included breakfast. When I arrived it was dark, so I didn’t get a good look at outside, but there was an outdoor restaurant and bar at the front. I wandered to reception and got checked in, which was simple enough process as I don’t speak very good French and hand signals and the print out was all I needed to get checked in.
There was a lift up to my 2nd floor room and I wandered down a very dark and long corridor to room number 203. Now I don’t know if this is a typical room in the hotel or not, but all the rooms next to it looked a similar size, so perhaps it was. I opened the door and immediately had some difficulty removing my key from the lock (I was tired, so perhaps that was the reason for my ineptitude). When I finally got into the room, I was a little taken aback at how basic the room was, just two very low single beds in the middle, a formica white desk/drawers at one end, a door to a balcony, a tv on the wall that wasn’t plugged in and had no plug socket near it, two little bedside tables and a built in wardrobe. It was perfectly adequate for my purposes and I quickly got unpacked and hung my clothes up. Everything was clean, even under the bed and in the back of the cupboards so that was good. There was however a slightly worrying stain on the ceiling, see photos. There was, most importantly in my opinion a very effective air conditioning unit, which was good for a big softy like me who melts in the heat!

The bathroom was tiny, basically a cupboard that had been installed near the front door, with a teeny tiny shower, toilet and sink. That too was clean and as it was just me in the room I thought it was fine for my use. I did however, manage to smack my head on the sink while bending to pick things up when in the shower, so it was challenging having a shower. Every morning the bathroom was cleaned and was always spotless and clean, no matter how basic it looked. I would have been disappointed if I had booked this hotel for a holiday as there really wasn’t much to it.

The bed was comfy and had a foam mattress so no squeaky springs or uncomfortable parts. The hotel itself is a short walk from a beach and from various restaurants. Throughout the night the area around it was very quiet, which was nice, but if you’re looking for a crazy nightlife you will not find it here. The balcony was small but had two chairs on it so I did spend some time sitting outside, although I managed to get myself locked out of my room as the balcony door didn’t have an outside handle on it and the wind blew it shut whilst I was outside. Luckily a neighbour came and let me back into my room, otherwise I could have had a very miserable night!

Breakfast was actually quite good as far as continental European breakfasts go. I was given a basket with a portion of baguette in it and a croissant then had free range over coffee, tea, cereal, fruit salad, yoghurt, cheese, real ham, muffins and juice. Suffice to say I started my day very well indeed. But when I came to check out I had been charged for the breakfast every single day. At €7.50 a day, this was very expensive and when I got home I saw that on the original form it said that my booking included breakfast, so I think the hotel was being a little naughty.

The staff were friendly enough given the language barrier and seemed to tolerate my rubbish French, they certainly weren’t rude which was something I have read in other reviews. I did read a review about personal belongings going missing from the room, so I made sure that I didn’t leave my camera/passport/money/laptop in the room. That was easy enough for me to do as I was in a meeting most of the day, therefore not having to worry about getting sand in anything.

All in all a basic hotel to stay in that’s quiet and serves good food. Definitely not luxurious though!

I also had a look at the drink menu and although there was an extensive wine list I didn’t feel like wine, so I had a champagne cocktail called Le Yacht, very nice it was too.

The restaurant had a few other tables, but was really quiet, no music playing and all I could hear was the rigging from the nearby yachts blowing in the wind. When the meal arrived it was fantastic, really very tasty and a reasonably sized portion. I had a lovely relaxing meal followed by a delicious and beautifully prepared pudding. The thing that I liked best about this restaurant was that despite being nearly time to close up the staff didn’t rush me to finish and were happy to leave me digesting until almost 11pm. I didn’t think that the price was too bad either, because for the two courses and my cocktail it came to €24 and the food really was delicious. At the end of the day you can’t expect bargain basement food within 30 miles of St. Tropez!

I also ate here again for lunch and a very helpful waiter helped me understand the menu as I was without my trusty phrasebook. I had a lovely chef's salad followed by delicious chocolate mousse. The restuarant were very quick getting the food out to me, but it was once again beautiful and they didn't rush me. I also felt comfortable eating here on my own, overlooking the yachts! Read Less
