The Helsinki Design Museum was one of the things my sister wanted to go and see rather than me. I wasn’t too bothered at all if I’m honest but I didn’t really mind her dragging me there too much to begin with. The museum is not easy to find though. Before heading there, we stopped off at the tourist information centre to figure out where we were going and exactly how to get there. Even after having a map, we got lost and it should have only been a 10 minute walk away. After nearly 30 minutes, we realised we had no idea where we were going and decided to find help. After asking a local, who explained how to get there, we found it in only a couple of minutes. Instead of walking there from the...Read More

Getting to Suomenlinna is extremely easy. From the market square, you can catch a ferry which takes you straight to the fort and brings you back. Tickets cos €7 and that is for a return which also includes entrance to the fort. The €7 does not include entrance to the 6 museums though as they are added extras once you get there. The ferry trip takes roughly 20 minutes and as the ferry has an open upper deck, you can get some really nice views on the way. The whole fort is made up of 4 islands, 2 of which are accessible to tourists. As you get off the ferry, there is quite a large map so that you can decide which route you would like to take. You are free to walk around the island though and ...Read More

When I’m on holiday, although I like museums, I like to go and see other things as well. Sea Life Centres are always a fun thing to go and see so that was one of the first things I looked up after I knew I’d be going to Helsinki. The Sea Life Centre is actually quite far out of the city centre and you really can’t walk there so the only options are to get a bus or a tram. The journey takes roughly 20 minutes on either mode of transport. You can catch the 3B tram or the 23 bus at the main bus terminal, next to the train station, and get off at the Alppila stop. From here, the Sea Life Centre is a short walk away and because it is so close and signposted, you can’t get lost. Once...Read More

Another of the museums I visited while in Helsinki was the Ateneum. The museum is situated right across from the main train station. While we visited, the front was covered with a white sheet and a big pair of antlers which promotes their newest exhibition. At first, we were actually unsure if the museum was open or not as it looked like it was being worked on so we didn’t go for the first few days we were in Helsinki. == Admission/ Opening Times == Tue, Fri 10–18Wed, Thu 10–20Sat, Sun 11–17Mon closedNormal admission fee €10 Discount admission fee €8 Children under 18 years free admissionS Privilege Card holders €9 The disco...Read More

My sister and I are really not into the whole beach holiday thing and the thought of going somewhere like Ibiza or Magaluf is our idea of hell. Not knowing where to go this year, we thought somewhere a little bit different would be fun so we picked Helsinki, Finland. (Also Tallinn, Estonia after a bit of a flight mess - see ‘Getting There’)Getting thereGetting to Helsinki was a bit of a nightmare for my sister and I. We had originally booked direct flights with a low cost airline who then decided that they were not going to fly to Finland at all anymore so we were left with a refund and finding another way to get there. After looking at different airlines, we realised that flying str...Read More
