Fernsehturm is the German for Berlin and this one in Berlin, standing at 368 metres high, is germany's tallest building. It was constructed in the 60s by the then German Democratic Republic as a symbol of Berlin and it has achieved that status as it is probably one of the most visited places in the city (after the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie). Located just off Alexanderplatz, it is easily seen from pretty much anywhere in the city. From the outside, the tower is pretty striking. I personally thought it was also pretty ugly as it is basically a huge metal dome on the top of a huge metal stick. It looks like one of those 80s disco balls. Apparently when the sun shines on it the reflect...Read More

We visited Berlin in December and, whilst it was very pretty to see the snow everywhere and the Christmas markets all lit up beautifully, it was also very cold. On one of the days we decided to take refuge in KaDeWe, a huge department store which is so big that only London's Harrods store is bigger in Europe. With almost half a million items to buy, it really is the shopaholic's dream. The store is actually called Kaufhaus De Westerns (Department Store of the West) and is presumably shortened to make it easier to say and easier to fit on the sign above the door. It is located near the centre of the former West Berlin on the major shopping street Tauentzienstrasse, right at the end. You can'...Read More

I absolutely adore Christmas markets and every December my husband and I head off to a European city in search of one. Everything about them is brilliant from the smells of freshly prepared food to the sounds of people having fun. There is no denying that the Germans are the best at hosting Christmas markets and being Germany's capital city, Berlin has something to prove - can it be the best? After visiting this last Christmas, I have to say that they can be proud. There are hundreds of Christmas markets across Berlin and they open around the end of November (usually the last weekend) and they tend to close just before the new year. Opening times during the day vary, but tend to be from aro...Read More

In a city that is rich with history, both good and bad, Checkpoint Charlie and the museum that sits next to it is possibly one of the most interesting and one of the most prominent reminders of Germany's chequered past. The Haus Am Checkpoint Charlie is located next to the old allied crossing point for the Berlin wall and houses an exhibition of the history of the wall.Briefly, the Berlin wall was built by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) in 1961 to officially prevent 'the fascist elements conspiring to prevent the will of the people by building a socialist state in Eastern Germany'. In reality is was designed to prevent the mass emigration of Germans trying to escape the comm...Read More

Attraction | "Berlin's Most Famous Landmark"

Brandenburg Gate Photo, Berlin, Germany
Quote:
The Brandenburg Gate (or Brandenburg Tor as it is known in Germany) is without a doubt the landmark that is most associated with the city of Berlin and almost all of the souvenirs you find hereabouts will have a reference to the gate on them somewhere. Standing just west of the centre of the city at the egde of Pariser Platz, it is a symbol that has been with the city through it's turbulent history and it is probably one of the most photographed things in Berlin. It was built between 1788 and 1791 as the gated entrance to the tree lined avenue that lead to the palace of the Prussian monarchs. It has since become a sort of victory symbol, almost as if walking beneath it means you are walking...Read More
