Being students on somewhat of a budget, we looked for cheap accommodation for our first couple of nights in Victoria (before we could check into our posh hotel, see other review). When searching from the U.K. on the web this seemed to be the only hotel in the downtown area. So we went ahead and had a look at their excellent website, were pleased with what we saw and booked a dorm room. There are various different room combinations you can book, from private small rooms to big dorms all varying in price. We arrived in Victoria via the Clipper ferry from Seattle and so arrived in Victoria harbour, but managed to walk to mile or so to the hostel with our bags. The hostel was very easy to find ...Read More

Whilst at our conference in Victoria, we obviously had to find places to eat. When we were staying in the local hostel we wandered past this downtown eatery during the day and jumped in to have some lunch. The thing we had noticed about Victoria was that there was plenty of Asian influenced food everywhere and The Mint was not exception. We were drawn in with the promise of curry boxes and found ourselves in a relatively small cafe area just off the street. My friend was particularly impressed with the amount vegetarian food available, as on visits to North America in the past she has often struggled to find places to eat.The staff were very friendly and didn't rush us in making our choice...Read More

At the end of our conference, we had a closing party, which was held here at the Strathcona Hotel. It was walking distance from the Victoria Conference Centre being only 1 block away. If you were staying here as a hotel it's pretty centrally located and you shouldn't really need a car to get around Victoria itself. However, beware because underneath the hotel is a bar & club that stretches over two floors and I can imagine this would be noisy for guests trying to get some sleep. For us however, well we just wanted to have some fun and relaxtion following a pretty gruelling conference schedule. We were a bit unimpressed with the basement entrance, but that soon vanished when we headed in...Read More

As I mentioned in my previous review I was visiting Victoria primarily for a conference. The conference itself was held in the Fairmont Empress, the pretty imposing hotel that you can't miss on a wander around Victoria. behind here however is possibly the less well known Crystal Garden, which was Victoria's first convention centre...but it was so much more. It was also a saltwater swimming pool, a dance hall, a tearoom and even a gymnasium. It has held a whole host of events from beauty pageants to military training exercises.Originally opened in 1925 it was the heart of downtown Victoria and although it has since lost it's swimming pool it is still part of Victoria Conference Centre. On our visit to Victoria we were attending a conference for the first half of the trip then having a holiday in the second. Work found us an apartment within the Parkside Victoria, which was handily located walking distance from downtown and our conference venue. The Parkside itself is a modern looking building with lots of landscaping around the outside and when we headed in the main entrance there is a lot of landscaping inside too. The building is made up of two wings and the central atrium is right where the main entrance is. As you step inside you can hear running water and see lots of plants, there is loads of natural light coming from the glass atrium and as you look up you can see ...Read More

I had never heard of Rebar prior to my visit to Victoria, but one of the locals from the conference we were at started to tell us about it. I wasn't particularly excited because not being vegetarian I didn't think there would be anything that I liked eating, let alone kept me full (oh how wrong I was!). So we booked a table for a Saturday night and 4 of us headed to the restuarant. We had to wait a little while before getting seated and I have to say the decor and layout wasn't as I imagined. It was very colourful, with bright plastic table covers. There was a juice/coffee bar and lots of tables all around. The place was busy and I was pleased we had booked a table because people who came in after us ...Read More

I have to say the highlight of my trip to Victoria was going whale-watching and seeing Orcas in the wild. I have been whale watching a few times in other parts of the world, but up until this trip I had never seen Orcas. So as soon as I knew I was going to be in Victoria I quickly started researching different whale-watching tours. Being conscious of how sensitive these mammals must be to lots of noisy boats and crazy tourists it was really important for me to find a tour operator that was responsible and took care of the environment. I didn't have to search long before I found Orca Spirit Adventures who are part of the Whale Watch Operators Association Northwest and dedicated to responsible tourism....Read More

Mum and I started our trans-Canadian trip in Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island and is the capital city of British Columbia. It doesn't feel very much like a Capital City and could be described as quite quaint. We walked everywhere and although there are some places you perhaps don't want to be wandering around when it's dark I felt perfectly safe, even when I was on my own.Anyway as I have already said in several of the other reviews in this journal, Mum and I were trying to stay in as many different, quirky types of accomodation that we could on this trip. I thought, well everyone says how English Victoria is lets stay in a B&B. After a bit of searching through my guidebook and a...Read More
