So anyone who has read my other review will know I am not very good at shopping, I think I have never grown out of being the small child whose feet hurt and gets stressed when shopping. So when my sister suggested we visit Monks Cross on the outskirts of York on the way home from our lovely day, I begrudgingly agreed. There are plenty of buses that run out from the city centre to Monks Cross, including park and ride buses. So in theory if you wanted to do a bit of shopping you could park here and use the park and ride to get into the city centre, because parking is a bit of nightmare there. We actually drove out to Monks Cross and didn't have too much trouble parking. There are two sections...Read More

Attraction | "How to amuse the kids for free!"

National Railway Museum Photo, York, England

Well ok, you would have to live in York to be able to do this for free, there will always be transport costs, but this is a totally free museum (how it should be in my opinion). What's more is that it is right near the train station so if you have some time to spare before your train ride you can just amuse the kids in here. The museum itself is in a large hall, which used to be an old rail depot, and it is literally full of trains to explore and there are loads of interactive displays. In addition the kids can climb all inside some of the trains and learn how they actually work. In the centre of the main hall is a working turntable, which has demonstrations throughout the day. There are 5 halls in to...Read More

Attraction | "The Gothic Heart of York"

Quote:
York Minster is the huge gothic cathedral in the centre of York. It is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second highest office in the Church of England. It is the second largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and began it's life in York around 1260 (although building continued right into the 1500s). The Minster has a long history that you can find out about with a visit inside, it has weathered the English Reformation and the English Civil War and still holds services today. The building itself has a cruciform layout and the north and south transepts were the first parts to be built. One of the highlights of any visit is standing and gazing up at the Rose window in the south tran...Read More

Evil Eye is a hidden gem in York, you can wander straight past it on Stonegate and not even know it was there. But if you look closely you will see the logo on the sign, which is of course an eye. The logo is taken from Classical Greece (and later Mediterranean cultures) which believed that people could put the evil eye on you by being envious and this was a curse and brought you harm. The logo is a development of the traditional talisman to ward off this curse, which is made up of blue concentric circles with an eye in the middle. Once you find the sign, you'll see the shop frontage which is basically a liquour store right there on the historic street. You can pass straight through a litt...Read More

Restaurant | "Elegant Luxury in the Heart of York"

Betty's tearoom is a bit of an institution in York, whenever I have friends visiting the city they always want to go and have afternoon tea here. That isn't to say that there isn't anywhere else to have a traditional English afternoon tea in York. In fact there are plenty of places that are cheaper and possibly almost as good, but Betty's is an experience rather than just somewhere to get something to eat!Betty's began with a Swiss orphan called Frederick Belmont who spent his teenage years as an apprentice in a whole variety of confectioners and bakeries across Europe, he then travelled to England to make his name. Once arriving in Yorkshire he was reminded of his beautiful home country ...Read More
