Hanahana is a Japanese and Teppan-Yaki Restaurant which is found near Chinatown in Newcastle. It's often very busy, especially on a weekend so I would recommend making reservations if you are in a big group, or to avoid being disappointed. We visited here as something different, none of us had ever had Japanese food before so thought that it would be some fun.Inside the restaurant is made up of eight teppanyaki grill stations, that you sit around and watch the amazingly skilled Teppanyaki chefs go to work at cooking your food right there in front of you. It's a really fun experience and we were actually there for a friend's birthday so we got a very unique birthday cake.....it was fried r...Read More

Attraction | "Get yourself down to the Dene!"

Jesmond is a rather well to do area of Newcastle, it's just a mile or so from the city centre and is often the haunt of students. So when the weather is nice there is often a rush of people heading to the park that runs between Heaton and Jesmond, the Dene. Essentially it is a narrow wooded valley that follows the river Ouseburn and is actually considered to be a wildlife corridor in the centre of the city. What is fantastic about the Dene is that it stretches for about 3km and is a wonderful mix of busy areas of activity and little oasis' of tranquility. In fact I would argue that the only downside of the Dene is the walk back up when you have finished your visit. There are lots of things ...Read More

Attraction | "Shop till you Drop!"

I don't really get on very well with shopping, which is why this only has 3 stars. In fact most of the time I hate shopping, it sucks and I would much rather be out doing something more interesting. So imagine the fixed smile on my face when our local guides wanted to take us out to the big retail park near Newcastle. There are buses that run out from the city centre but we drove and it took us about 20 minutes to get there. There was plenty of parking (10,000 spaces) in and around the metro centre so we didn't have to worry about that.Depending on where you park will decide which entrance you use but there are maps all over the place so you can locate the shops you need. The Metro Centre ...Read More

Travelodge Newcastle Gosforth

Hotel | "A quiet place to rest your head"

Quote:
I have to say that Travelodges serve a purpose, they are supposed to be cheap and cheerful and standard wherever you go. In my experience this has not always been the case, often they are in not so nice areas and the rooms are less than desirable. This particular hotel was in a nice enough location, just a few miles from Newcastle city centre. You will need a car or a taxi to get to it and although there is a Mcdonalds and a pub onsite as well as a co-op there isn't a lot around. In fact this hotel is just off the A1 so I suppose ideal for a flying visit. However, without a car you will be pretty much stranded so I would look for somewhere closer to either a metro station or the city centre, because i...Read More

Attraction | "Lovely local pub, with a great atmosphere"

Brandling Arms Photo, Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Quote:
The Brandling Arms is a pub in an area of Newcastle-upon-tyne called Gosforth. This is an area popular with young professionals and sometimes final year students, so you will often find that these are the people in the Brandling. The pub is located right on the high street in Gosforth so you can't really miss it and all you have to do is ask someone for directions if you're lost, everyone knows where it is!When we visited it was really very busy, but the atmosphere was still really friendly and relaxed. No-one was in a rush to be served and even the bar staff who were working efficiently were not rushing, they were just working hard. We soon realised that the reason the pub was so busy was...Read More
