Los Angeles before the Ultimate

A November 2000 trip to Los Angeles by kiminhalifax

Quote: We stopped in Los Angeles to see the sights for a few days before leaving for Australia. This was to break up the trip from the east coast of Canada to the other side of the world WARNING -- I ended up not being the LA type -- my journal may be tainted by this -- but if you like beaches, skinny people in small bathing suits, and a lot of violent traffic you'll enjoy it!!!!

Los Angeles before the Ultimate

Overview

What do you think of when you think Los Angeles? Photo, Los Angeles, California

Bouncing with Tigger was the ultimate!! He's a cuddly, bouncy, ball of fun fun FUN!!

Beaches are nice, but I've decided that I'm just not a LA type of girl -- hope you like it all more than I did.

Quick Tips:

Get a hotel that is central -- we chose Anaheim because we wanted to be in the centre of Tijuana, San Diego, Disneyland, beaches, and Hollywood -- it worked!!

Best Way To Get Around:

We rented a car which worked great, if you have someone brave enough to attempt driving in LA -- a lot of our time was spent screaming at the lunatics on the road!!

Comfort Inn & Suites

Great - King bed, elevator, good sized room

Free Continental Breakfast -- muffins, donuts, fruit, cereals, breads/toaster, juice, milk, tea, coffee, etc. Filling and FREE!!

Complimentary shuttle to DISNEYLAND!!

Watch out for the ad -- 2 blocks from Disneyland!! Each block is close to a mile -- ouch that hurts my feet.

Heaven!! But crowded. If you don't like kids, don't go. It's made for kids of all ages.

The fireworks displays were great, and the parade at the end of the day was what dreams are made of.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is incredible!!! It is right beside Mann's Chinese Theatre, which is home to all the footprints/handprints of celebrities. Putting your hands in Marilyn Munroe's handprints is a cool feeling, although very expected. Tom Hanks is another one to remember. Oldies but goodies from the walk of fame are Mr. Rogers, Hitchcock, Bob Barker, and Gene Autrey. While you are walking the Walk of Fame, note the "exotic" lingerie stores and Frederick's of Hollywood lingerie museum -- very interesting!! We cruise around the area of Hollywood & Vine to see where Hugh Grant got caught with a hooker, visit Rodeo Drive (which is a lot smaller/...Read More

Museum Of Man

It's a museum, that's it!!

It seems to focus on handicrafts and archaeology of cultures. The visiting exhibit (not special exhibit) was pottery of a latin-American family. Nice stuff, but it all looked the same.

Good displays of man through the ages in the area Lucy is kept in -- look we used to be ape-like!! And there are kiosks set up to help you learn in a hands on way.

We drove the Pacific Coast Highway from Newport Beach to Santa Monica.

We didn't realize that with our meanderings, it would take us 6 hours to cover that distance. But stops to see tar ponds, look at beaches, eat, and look at lifeguards ends up making for a LOOOOOOONG day.

Lots of nice beaches, a lot of "Bay Watch" sites, and lots of quaint little towns next to the ocean is what you'll see.

And just hope your travelling companion doesn't sing...
"All I wanna do is have some fun Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard"
all day -- I was ready to kill Sheryl Crow!!!

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA Friday, November 17, 2000 We arrive at LAX at 6:20pm, it takes 1 hour to find the rental car and 2 hours to drive to the hotel (in Anaheim) on very crowded, very large highways (8 lanes in each direction at some points!!). Our tasty meal for the evening is McDonald’s and then it’s time for beddie-bye. Saturday, November 18, 2000 We’re cross-border shopping today – off to Tijuana for cheapy Mexican day. I pick up a few things for souvenirs and we eat in Mexico. The special at the restaurant is deafening music and forcing tequila shots down the throats of unsuspecting customers (and then asking for payment for the pleasure of it all). ...Read More

Day Trip to Tijuana

We decide to take the day and visit Tijuana, Mexico. We park on the US side and wander around an outlet shopping centre -- Gap, Guess, Jockey, Nike, etc are all represented. There are the usual bargains at an outlet mall. A bus takes us from the US to Mexico - land of fun! We wander around -- funny how phoning home is so much easier in Tijuana than earlier in the year when we were in Puerto Aventuras (near Cancun) - no problem at all and the folks are quite disturbed that we have left the US and are in yet another country, until we explain the closeness of Tijuana to LA. Vendors on the streets are pushy, but only if you happen to show the slightest interest in their wares...Read More
