Mum and I started our trans-Canadian trip in Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island and is the capital city of British Columbia. It doesn't feel very much like a Capital City and could be described as quite quaint. We walked everywhere and although there are some places you perhaps don't want to be wandering around when it's dark I felt perfectly safe, even when I was on my own.Anyway as I have already said in several of the other reviews in this journal, Mum and I were trying to stay in as many different, quirky types of accomodation that we could on this trip. I thought, well everyone says how English Victoria is lets stay in a B&B. After a bit of searching through my guidebook and a...Read More

Vancouver is amazing, Mum and I loved the place. It's a weird juxtaposition of the outdoors, for which British Columbia is so well known, and city life...skyscraper city life. Everyone in Vancouver seemed to be fit and healthy and so when the weekend comes it shouldn't be a surprise that you'll find the majority of the city's inhabitants enjoying the wonders of Stanley Park.Forget Central Park in New York, this bad boy is bigger..10% bigger. It covers an area of over 1000 acres and it borders downtown Vancouver and the Pacific Ocean. The park has a seawall that stretches for nearly 9 km around the edge and this has a wonderful path for cyclists, skaters, walkers, joggers and runners. In th...Read More

So if you're having a look through this Journal you'll have figured out that this trip was my Mum and I travelling across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax and stopping at various cities on the way. By the time we got ourselves to Quebec City we had stayed in a jail hostel in Ottawa, a YWCA in Vancouver, a boutique hotel in Toronto, in a friend's house in Niagara and slept many nights on a train. We were tired and so we decided to spend two nights in Quebec City, because everyone told us it was quaint and we would like it.Well when I chose this hotel it was because it was only just over 1km from the train station, so Mum and I could happily walk with our luggage there and back and still be...Read More

I wish we could have stayed in this hotel for longer, as it was we were on a crazy schedule. We arrived via train into Toronto from visiting friends near Niagara. The hotel was a comfortable walking distance for us away from the train station, about 1km or 20 minutes walk with luggage (I had a backpack and Mum had a suitcase with wheels). As I've mentioned in this trip folder we were trying to stay in as many different kinds of hotel as we could and this one jumped out from the guide book. It was a bit on the pricey side of our budget, but really looking back at the credit card statement it wasn't that bad for the centre of Toronto. We paid approximately CAD$150 for one twin room with en-suite bathroo...Read More

I was nervous about staying here because I was with my Mum, but we arrived before we could check in and they let us leave our bags while we explored. When we could check in it was a really straightforward process and before we knew it we were climbing up the central staircase to our room. We were in a female only dorm that slept 4 and we weren't actually in the old jail but in the governers quarters. The room was spacious and clean with hardwood floors and the typical hostel bunkbeds. We had a sink and a mirror and lockers to store our valuables. There wasn't any air conditioning, which was a shame because when we were there Ottawa was suffering from a terrible heat wave and it was roastin...Read More
