We live in Boston. We had 2 days. We wanted Cheesesteak. We decided to take a last minute roadtrip to Philly to find the best. It was great! We left Boston early Saturday morning. We were in Philly just in time to indulge in 3 different Cheesesteak restaurants for lunch! Read our reviews below...and a few "non-cheesesteak" establishments as well.....

Jim's Steaks

Restaurant | "Good food, friendly service, but a long wait."

On a recent road trip to Philly my friends and I tried three different popular cheesesteak joints in Philly....Pat's, Jim's and Geno's. Jim's stands out as having the best service of the three. There was an extremely long line that went outside the air-conditioned building. The line went quickly and the men manning the grill and the register were quick, but were helpful and allowed you to ask questions about the menu. They even cut our steak three ways allowing us to split. This is something that Pat's wouldn't do.Seating was upstairs, and just like the other two restaurants you had to stand around and wait for a table. But it was inside, and airconditioned, and given the extreme heat we w...Read More

On a recent road trip to Philly my friends and I tried three different popular Cheese Steak joints in Philly....Pat's, Jim's and Geno's. Pat's was our least favorite of the three based mostly on the service that we received. The line was long...as anticipated. The three men cooking the steaks had the personality of rocks. The one manning the window didn't want to explain any menu options and was just pretty much rude. We asked if they could do onions on the side... to which he yelled back "no sides". We asked for fries "you don't get them at this window". Then he just said "next window" so I thought he meant that I had to pick up my Cheese Steak at the next window, but apparently he was still talking ...Read More

On our road trip to Philly my friends an I tried three different popular cheesesteak restaurants....Pat's, Jim's and Geno's. Geno's was our personal favorite. The service was actually surprisingly friendly and the line moved quickly. The seating, similar to Pat's, was all outside, and you had to stalk the tables waiting for someone to get up. I waited for a table while a friend waited in line, and the timing worked out well.At Geno's, we decided to try the french fries, which were nothing to write home about. As far as the steak, we were a bit disappointed in the size of the cheesesteak given the price, but with the onions and "whiz" Geno's had the best taste. We all agreed that this on...Read More

First off, let me say that I got the room for free using points, and as such my expectations might have been a little lower than usual. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality, size and proximity of this hotel. We were concerned upon entering the lobby as there were MAJOR renovations underway. We learned while checking in that this was due to a recent flood. Someone on the third floor decided to hang their clothes on the fire sprinkler head. Who does that?!?!? Anyway, our room was unaffected. Most of the other essential hotel rooms (breakfast room, pool, etc.) were also unaffected. The only complaint that could possibly be associated with the flood was that only one elevator was working. Th...Read More

Well, since we had some extra time...why not eat some more!! We decided to try a couple of restaurants by Chef Jose Garces. They were not a let down! See our Dinner and Brunch reviews below...

Village Whiskey

Restaurant | "Long wait, but great burgers!"

On a recent weekend visit to Philly I went with 2 other friends to try two of Chef Jose Garces' restaurants (Distrito and Village Whiskey)...three if you count drinks at Tinto! Village Whiskey is an intimate and hip bar/pub with a few rounded high-top booths. Reservations were not accepted and this being a Saturday night we anticipated a wait. We were given a two hour wait, but went next door and had a drink . The wait was actually a little shorter than the 2 hours we were told, which was nice. Once we actually were seated and looked around we realized how small the restaurant was and why the wait was so long. In the end, it was worth it. The burgers were amazing. Two of us (including mysel...Read More

On a recent weekend visit to Philly I went with 2 other friends to try three of Chef Jose Garces' restaurants (Tinto, Distrito and Village Whiskey). Distrito was by far the most interesting of the three with swing booths a VW Bug booth, cool lighting, and kitsch everywhere. We loved it! We went for brunch on a Sunday morning and so two courses were included with our meal.I chose the chips and guac for my first course and chose the steak and eggs for my second course. The chips and guac were excellent (although came with an issue which I'll talk about later) and the steak and eggs was delicious. The steak was probably cooked much more rare than the "medium" that I ordered, but that do...Read More
