I have heard the story of Paul Revere and the Old North Church in Boston, MA since I was a small child. I knew the story of how Paul Revere was given two lanterns high in the church steeple as a message that the English was coming by sea instead of the thought land attack. This night in 1775 began the American Revolution. The church came to life again in the movie National Treasure with Nicholas Cage. So when we stopped to see a few sights in Boston on our way to the airport, I told my husband I wanted to see this church. We asked a woman in military dress how far the church was and if we could walk or should we drive. "It’s not too far, just a short walk probably under a mile". So off we started t...Read More

As I have grown older, I have become to realize there are all kinds of people in this world. Some you wonder if they are really who they say they are, and others you applaud for their stance in life. All of them you accept for who they are. I had one of those experiences one morning in Salem, MA. We had gotten to the small, historic center early in the morning before anything was really opened. I guess we were excited to start our vacation. So we started walking the streets observing and taking lots of pictures. Since nothing was open yet, I did a lot of window shopping. What I found was a menagerie of stores selling things to do with magic. Not the rabbit in the hat kind, but the real Wiccan kind. ...Read More

Bertucci's Brick Oven Pizzeria

Restaurant | "The best oven baked pizza"

Pizza, pasta, garlic, basil, soft chewy bread – Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant has it all and more. This is a chain of restaurants in the northeast of the US but you get the feel of a quaint, hometown, family owned restaurant. The décor consists of dark wood, warm colors, cozy high backed booths and an open kitchen where you can watch the large pizza oven flame and back the bubbling goodies. As soon as we walked in we felt like we were in someone’s home and somehow feeling the invitation of someone’s Italian momma to "sit and manga". After a hectic day of air travel and our first drive in crazy Boston, the invitation of this restaurant was met with open arms. We were greeted by a lovely, yo...Read More

Depot Diner

Restaurant

Quote:
Across from our motel in Beverly, Massachusetts was a line of businesses and restaurants. One of them was the Depot Diner and this is where we found a delicious breakfast at a delicious price. The breakfast menu is a full two pages and lists numerous egg dishes including a various assortment of omelets and breakfast sandwiches. There are other popular dishes such as waffles, pancakes, German potatoes and the such. We only wanted a light breakfast and waffles just sounded too sweet so both Mike and I both ordered a breakfast sandwich. Mine was made with sourdough bread, provolone cheese, ham and tomatoes. The sandwich is usually made with eggs but since I have an allergy, the staff was most...Read More

Our first and last night was spent at Lakeview Motor Lodge. I chose this motel for its location – its not too close nor too far from Boston. Being from a small city, Boston traffice had me a little frightened. My husband had travelled there with family in the past and had driven through Beverly, MA. It is a small town located on Highway 1A about 20 miles from the city of Boston and has the growing reputation of an artistic and cultural community as well as an old maritime history. Beverly was settled in 1626 as a farming and fishing village. You can still today see these aspects around town with its miles of shoreline, its growing downtown and the downtown Arts District.Lakeview Motor Lodg...Read More

Salem Witch Museum

What trip to the Boston area would be complete without visiting Salem and its famous witch museum? I questioned this myself when approached by my husband. He had been to Salem preciously and just knew I would like it. After doing a little research, I decided it might be a fun day after all. Salem is only 15-20 minutes from Beverly, where we stayed the night, so we arrived directly after breakfast around 9am. Not knowing that everything on the east coast opens an hour later than in the Midwest, we arrived too early for much of anything. After finding the museum opened at 10am we walked around town but when we returned we found a massive amount of bus tourists had picked all the tour spots so our first ...Read More

Since we arrived early in the morning in Salem, we decided to do a little walking and see the town while waiting for the town to open. The shops were just starting to open so we headed for a small indoor mall where we found a photo/costume shop. Surprisingly my husband wanted to go in and take a few pictures. Salem’s Vintage Photography shop was the kind of place where they dress you up in period costumes and take pictures of you doing funny or odd things. I hadn’t done anything like this since my childhood so I was up for a little fun. You had 5 themes to choose from: Witches and Wizards, Roaring 1920’s, Civil War, Pirates and Wild West. We chose the Witches and Wizards since we were in Salem. Ther...Read More
