Summer Visit to Stowe Vermont

A July 2000 trip to Stowe by Yankee in the World

We needed a short week away from the city. Had to find someplace with charm, good food and enough activites for all. We again choose Stowe. It was marvelous. We were pleased. The weather cooperated with temps in the upper 70s and sunshine

The veiw from the balcony at the Von Trapp Lodge is incredible. That is what I will remember for ever. The mountains are soft, green and as the sign leading up to the lodge says 'It's a little piece of Austria in Vermont.' I don't think the camera could capture the view. The lodge itself resembles the pictures you have seen of Austrian inns. The flowers boxes along the balconies. The folks at the desk are very friendly. They offer tours of the area (even one of the flowers in the gardens) and information to make any stay pleasant. We would suggest you take advantage of Tea Time, apple strudel, and Mozart concerts in the meadow for a lovely stay.

Quick Tips:

Besides all the usual small hotel activities (shuffle board, swimming and spa) you might want to enjoy a walk along the trails. Down the mountain along the bottom ridge is a bike path that is used by joggers and roller bladers. The path follows along the meadows and streams. Even the foot bridges are scenic. The athletic enthusiast can take a bike ride up Mt. Mansfield into the notch for a pretty decent work out. We choose to go by car and IT got the work out. The view of the falcon nests and ridge top is inspiring.
The tours of local factories were quick and fun for the kids. Ben and Jerry's ice cream was a highlight as was the Cabot Farm. The Maple Sugar farms are old and can pass off as part of an educatinal experience. Eating the products at the end of visits and tours is the best part.

Best Way To Get Around:

To get around on the moutain is easy. You can hike, walk or ride. The resort at the lodge is pretty self-contained so park the car and relax if you want that type of weekend. The Mountain Road area is not far down Luce Rd. by car or bike. There are plenty of antique shops and craft shops to entertain most. The restaurant at the Lodge is wonderful. Gourmets and children alike were pleased so you really have no need to travel down to another restaurant. If your choice is to venture beyond the lodge there are several excellent resaturants in Stowe.
The rooms were large and comfortable...but it was the view from the balcony at the main lodge that was memorable. The lodge was chic and the food was delicious. The Austrian Tea Room, besides serving afternoon teas, served from a wonderful luncheon menu. Soups and sandwiches and the greatest desserts. We dined on the deck overlooking the mountain view. The personnel were very friendly and helpful. At the lodge I signed up for a garden tour and the kids liked the mountain Kids Club.
