Hilton Prague

Hotel | "An ugly hotel in a city of great architecture"

We were taking a tour that started in Prague and ended in Paris. Having never been to Prague before, we booked in a day ahead of the tour and arrived to find the hotel that the tour group had chosen for us. We were horrified! Prague is a city famous for its architecture and we wanted to be downtown so that we could take evening walks to enjoy the ambience. Instead we had been booked into a modern, glass Hilton with no class or style, more of a businessman's hotel than one for a tourist. And it was almost a mile from downtown in almost a business park; the view from our window was the KPMG office which made me feel I was there for a Board Meeting! In addition the breakfast (which was included du...Read More

Prague Cafes

The Bar at the Hotel de Pariz, Prague Photo, Czech Republic, Europe

One of the things you must do while you visit Prague is to go to at the very least one of their famous cafes. It gives you a real feeling what life and service was like in the late 1800's. We were there for only three days and managed to get to three of them! Since we are a bit older and don't really care to go out in the evenings (especially when our hotel is a bit out of the way), we stopped for a glass of wine and dessert in the mid-afternoons.Probably our favorite cafe was in the elegant Hotel de Pariz. There we enjoyed a piece of their Paris Cake, baked from a 100 year-old recipe. It's on a chocolate base with a chocolate mousse filling with a slice of peach, and covered by a marz...Read More

U Fleku Beer Hall Restaurant & Brewery

Restaurant | "What a great time we had at U Flecku!"

A friend had recommended this place and we were amazed to find that it dated from 1499! And it's HUGE, seating about 1200 people in many rooms and outdoors. In this country that still allows smoking in restaurants (cough, cough), this place does have a no-smoking room: this is where we were seated. There are large tables where you are seated with others - we had 3 Russians at our table and there was a very lively table of 8 Italians across from us. Immediately after being seated, we were offered an aperitif (this was NOT free, so watch that). We ordered our meal but found the food to be just average - certainly nothing special, although the beer was terrific. But we loved the accordi...Read More

We were on a Viking River Cruise which included three nights in Prague and then a bus ride to Wurzburg where we would board our "home" for the next week, the Theodor Fontane. But first we had a tour of the magnificent Residenz, home to the prince-bishops who ruled the area. Prince-Bishop Friedrich Carl von Schonborn ruled in Wurzburg from 1729 to 1746 and was the primary force behind creating this palace which was completed in 1744. Balthasar Neumann ws the architect. The Grand Staircase, with frescoes showing the four known continents painted by famed Italian artistTiepolo, has a stunning unsupported vault of 18 X 30 meters. No photos are allowed inside. The rest of the palace is amazing to see...Read More

Gordon Ramsay Plane Food

Restaurant | "Not your average airport food!"

Gordon Ramsay Plane Food Photo, Hounslow, England

We were at Heathrow Airport, looking for a decent meal. What can you find at an airport? We were surprised to spot Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food and had a very satisfactory meal. Now, this is definitely not Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in London; this is airport food, but still not bad. A very nice experience. Then I noticed the Gordon Ramsay Picnic bags. For 11.95 pounds you can choose from 5 starters (including a tiger prawn salad), 4 main courses (including "Cumbrian honey-roast and Parma ham with slow roast vine tomatoes"), and 4 desserts (including "pear cheesecake tart with caramel" or a selection of cheeses). And it's all packed in a very much reusable insulated zippered bag. I w...Read More
