Not Really a Paradise

A September 2001 trip to Gold Coast by aussiemate

Quote: The whole Gold Coast area of Australia encompassing Broadbeach and Surfer's is very built up. It's a crazy city on a long expanse of coastline which reminded me of a spring break party town. There is an area with three types of bungi activities: bungi rocket where two can ride together, bungi cord on trampoline, and traditional bungi. There were crowds gathered to watch and to ride every time we walked by. The beach is very nice, and it is fun to watch the pros surfing. The water was very clear. I'd recommend spending time at the beach but avoiding the zillions of tourist shops.

Go swimming.
Go drinking.
Go Bowling.

Quick Tips:

Don't spend more than two nights here if you are not a partier because it will get very old very fast.

Best Way To Get Around:

We found that walking was the best way to get around, but cabs are easy to find. The monorail is very limited.

It was a gorgeous sunny day in the Gold Coast, and we were able to check right into our room at noon when we arrived at 11am. The hotel gave us a corner suite since we are Hilton Gold members, and the room had a balcony overlooking the beach facing south toward Coolangatta. We took a walk across the street to the beach and saw that the women''s triathlon competition of the Goodwill Games was about to start. We watched a portion of the running and rowing part, and then we decided to walk into Surfer''s Paradise. It was about a 5K walk, and we were lucky enough to arrive at our destination just ahead of a rain shower. We had the buffet breakfast at Food Fantasy included in our room rate...Read More

Benihana the Japanese Steakhouse

Went to Benihana our first night in Surfer's. Benihana was our favourite Japanese steakhouse in the US, and this is the only location in Australia. It was very similar to the one in Las Vegas that we love. The miso soup was a little different, and there was no swordfish on the menu.

The chef put on an excellent show, and the food was terrific. The shrimp and fried rice were just like in Vegas -- delectable. Two different wedding parties were at other tables there, which was also reminiscent of Vegas.

Bavarian Haus

We had dinner at the Bavarian Haus on our other night in Surfer's Paradise. It was fun when the German entertainment started with their songs and instruments. The food tasted quite authentic, and the huge steins of beer were about the size of four regular ones. During the day, an outdoor cafe is open next door. The Haus also has a fun giftshop and a full-time pub. The only thing missing was spaetzel which was no where to be found on the menu. I had to find solaace in the delicious mashed potatoes instead.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Attraction | "Currumbin Sanctuary"

The Currumbin Sanctuary was an average wildlife park. We thought there would be many wombats here, but there was only one. He was a common wombat, our favourite kind. He was really big, but he didn't feel like running with us.

They had about 30 koalas, though, and they were cute. The rest of the park was pretty good but it was very small. It only takes an hour to feel you have seen everything here. We didn't feel it was worth the price.
