The Hippodrome Istanbul. What is a hippodrome you may well ask? I was not familiar with it until I visited it myself in Istanbul and is a large arena where they used to race chariots and horses. It was also used as a circus venue and for other competitive sports. It is now known as Sultanahamet Square. The hippodrome was built beside the palace of the Byzantine capital of Constantinople now known as Istanbul and was built in the shape of a horse shoe. There was a pathway from the palace that was only used by the Emperor and his family that lead right to the royal boxes. From here he was able to watch the races that took place below in the arena. There was a large horse raci...Read More

We stayed in this small hotel which is ideally placed in the Sultanahamet area of Istanbul close to all the major attractions of the old city for example the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace and the cistern. It is situated in one of the smaller streets which is free from traffic and pedestrianised which was quite nice and along the street are a few restaurants that spill out onto the pavement areas. There is a small shop next door to buy essentials like water and other essentials. The hotel facilities are as follows.60 rooms, single, twin, double and triple.Dining/breakfast room.A terrace bar and street side tables.Nice sumptuous loungesIndoor swi...Read More

Attraction | "A Palace fit for a Sultan."

Topkapi Palace Photo, Istanbul, Turkey
Quote:
The Topkapi Palace. The Topkapi palace was the home to the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire for over four hundred years from the 15th century to the middle of the 19th century. Construction of the original palace was started in 1459 and the sultan took up residence two years later. It covers a very large area of Istanbul on one of its seven hills overlooking the Bosphorus straits. From the terraces of the palace there are super views over the Bosphorus towards the Asian side of Istanbul. The purpose of the palace was not only as the home of the Sultan but also of the government and officials of the Ottoman Empire. It contained the treasures of the Sultan, his quarters, his harem, a...Read More

Hagia Sophia.St.Sophia Museum. In answer to the title it has been in fact all three!Following my visit to the Blue Mosque directly opposite is the Hagia Sophia known in Turkish as the Aya Sophia. If you think the blue mosque is impressive then you will be absolutely astounded by the beauty found inside the Hagia Sophia. It was originally a Christian church then a mosque and now a museum. The orthodox meaning of Hagia Sophia is the church of the holy wisdom.History of the Hagia Sophia.Throughout time there have been three churches built on the site. The first church was built in and around 300AD during the reign of Constantius II but it was burnt down in riots in the ...Read More

Attraction | "It won't leave you feeling blue."

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii) Photo, Istanbul, Turkey
Quote:
The Blue Mosque. The blue mosque is a familiar sight of the sky line on Istanbul’s European side of the city which is separated from the Asian side by the Bosphorus. Its official name is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque or in Turkish the Sultanahmet Camii. It is situated in the Sultanamet area of Istanbul with the Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and Topkapi palace all within a stone’s throw of each other. The Blue Mosque can be seen from various points throughout Istanbul but looks very impressive from the Bosphorus being built on top of one of the seven hills that make up Istanbul. It is called the blue mosque because of the blue tiles that cover the walls inside the mosque and not because the ex...Read More
