I had not realised prior to this trip, but Miami and Miami Beach are actually separate cities. Miami, on the mainland, is South Florida's commercial hub, while Miami Beach is 17 islands on Biscayne Bay. It is sometimes referred to as "America's Riviera". You can see why - there are miles of sandy beaches, lots and lots of palm trees and nightlife aplenty. In the 1950's Miami Beach was where the Rat Pack and Al Capone hung out. The huge self contained hotels found here, were actually holiday destinations in themselves. In the 1960's and 1970's though, people started to rent apartments in this area and tourism began to decline. The hotels fell into disrepair, and it was no longer so pop...Read More

South Beach is the ideal spot to base yourself when holidaying in Miami. There are lots of hotels in this area, we opted for Loews and thought it was superb. It is a 4 star, bustling, ocean front resort hotel which has 85,000 square feet of meeting space, but is also a favourite place for holiday makers. The location is really excellent - so convenient for exploring South Beach, but also right next to the beach. The building is unmistakeable from the outside - a white bullet shaped building you can see from many parts of Miami. Inside the decor is very glamorous, cosmopolitan and Art Deco. The amenities at Loews are second to none. The hotel has recently had a $50 million re...Read More

The duck tour is a lot of fun, but is also a different, if somewhat wacky way to experience the sights of Miami. It is great for adults and children alike. Parents get to see all the sights such as the Versace Mansion and the houses on Millionaires Row, while children get to ride in the duck vehicle and do lots of quacking - win win for everyone! The tour begins on Washington Avenue in South Beach between Lincoln Road and 17th Street. We had pre-booked on-line, but you still have to collect your tickets from their office. The duck was parked on the next streeet. It starts off on land and takes you around South Beach. We then headed to the MacArthur Causeway for Watson Islan...Read More

Eating out in South Beach

There are no end of restaurants and places to eat in South Beach, with every cuisine under the sun. It can be a bit daunting, but the following is where we chose to dine during our stay in this area.On our first evening we headed to Lincoln Road. This is a lovely street with a mixture of shops, boutiques, art galleries and museums. 7 blocks of Lincoln Road are closed to traffic, so you can wander freely, which is very pleasant. This pedestrianised area is good for shopping and there are lots of palm trees and pools, so also very pretty. In the afternoon the cafes are bustling and we saw some street performers. In the evening there are lots of nice restaurants with indoor and outdoor ...Read More

South Pointe Park is a good place to go with children. If you time it right, and there is a cruise ship leaving the Port of Miami, it is a lot of fun to watch it set sail from South Pointe Park. Here, you get a great view of the huge cruise ships leaving and we even found, that by staring long enough, it felt like we were moving too!South Pointe Park is 17.5 acres. It has recently been renovated and the 20 foot wide walkway is a good place for a stroll. Children can run around, there is no traffic and the ocean beside you makes for a beautiful view. Avoid it in the early afternoon though, the heat of the sun is intense and there are not many shady places. You get all differ...Read More

This is not, I think, on the agenda for most tourists and visitors to Miami Beach. I am very glad that we visited, and I do think it is a place you should see during a stay in South Beach. The memorial is located at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue. We got there early in the morning, before the sun got really hot later in the day.The memorial was opened in 1990 and was the idea of a committee of Holocaust survivors. Apparently, there are more survivors of the Holocaust living in Miami than there are in Israel. It is a very inspirational memorial to the Jewish victims who were killed during the Holocaust - more than 6 million who perished. You can see the main part of the...Read More
