A May 2011 trip to Idaho by catsholiday

Quote: As part of of four week drive through part of the great United states we visited the state of Idaho. We encountered a fair bit of rain and some snow which caused us to change our plans but we saw some very interesting places along the way.

Restaurant | "Mexican in Idaho?"

El Jaliciense Mexican RestaurantThis little restaurant looks a bit like a large blue rather tatty shed from the outside. Indeed if we hadn’t been recommended this place by the receptionist at Clover creek motel, I am not sure that we would have been tempted to go and eat there as it did look a bit unappealing. We had been driving all day and hadn’t eaten since breakfast and it was now about 4 in the afternoon so our options were a bit limited as it was a strange time to be eating so when we asked where she might recommend for something to eat and the receptionist pointed to this place across the road we thought that convenience ruled and off we went. When we got...Read More

Montpelier, Is this a city?

Story/Tip

Montpelier, IdahoThis rather small, quiet, town of Montpelier is the largest community in the Bear Lake Valley; this area is situated north of Bear Lake in southeast Idaho along the Utah border. The population is only about 3,000 so it is hardly a huge metropolis but it is a city and has been so since 1891 which seemed odd to us as this is a town size in the UK.We stayed the night in this little town or city as the Americans call it on our way from Salt Lake City to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. We chose this little town mainly because of the Oregon Trail Centre museum in the town as we found it on the internet and thought it sounded worth a visit....Read More

Attraction | "On with the journey"

THE JOURNEY BEGINS:Each day starts at around 4.30am, the women make the breakfast while the men pack up the camp. Some men ride ahead on horses to clear the trail. The trail has been carefully planned and follows rivers and the easiest path as best it can. Rivers need to be crossed at times and there are still major hazards but this route is one that has been followed by many over the last few years and months.A good day of travel wouldl cover 18 to 20 miles. A bad day could bring all kinds of dangers and disasters.DANGERS AND DISASTERS:Crossing rivers was one of the most hazardous parts of the journey as they could be deeper than thought or the bed more muddy. A ro...Read More

The National Oregon/California Trail Centre320 North 4th StreetMontpelierIdahoWe needed to break our journey somewhere between Salt Lake City and Jackson Wyoming and wanted to stay somewhere that had something of interest for us to see. We spent some time looking on the internet planning our trip and this museum rather appealed to us and Montpelier was a convenient place to stay too. The National Oregon/California Trail Center is located on the historic Oregon/California Trail, mid-way between Jackson/Yellowstone and Salt Lake City. When I say on, it really is on the trail right on a former camping site. Evidence has been found as the excavation was taking place for the ...Read More

Clover Creek InnMontpelierIdahoWHY STOP HERE?We stayed one night in this motel between Salt Lake City and Jackson Hole in Wyoming. We chose Montpelier as we both wanted to visit the Oregon Trail museum there. We looked to book on line before we left the UK and thought this one looked okay. We looked on Trip advisor and a lot of reviews were very negative so we decided to leave it until we were there to decide.WHERE TO STAY?We arrived in Montpellier at about 3 pm after spending the morning on Antelope Island and then driving through the most spectacular scenery through the Wasatch Mountains passed Bear lake and finally to the small town of Montpelier.
