Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery

Attraction | "Great Wine Tastings"

Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery Photo, Leon, Virginia
Quote:
Located on Rt. 29 in Madison County. Offers self guided tours of the barrel room and vineyards. The vineyard was started in 1982, and the wines have already won quite a few awards. Wine tastings are in the wine shop over the barrel cave and tank room. They have suites available and can cater events. We sampled some great wine, enjoyed the view, and had a pleasant afternoon. Would definitely visit again.

Hazel River Inn

Restaurant | "Great for a special occasion"

Hazel River Inn Photo, Culpeper, Virginia
Quote:
This restaurant is great, but it is a little pricey! It was a celebration dinner for us. It's in an old building which is on the historic register and very charming. Dinner for us was steaks, which were cooked perfectly. They also have a pub for more casual dining, and a bed and breakfast nearby. Would highly recommend for a high end dinner. Open Thursday - Sunday for lunch and dinner.

When you want to pamper yourself, visit this restaurant! It's European style, and features seafood, pastas, and various meat entrees with vegetables and sauces. We had the veal and pasta, and the scallops. It's a little pricey, but the food was wonderful and the restaurant was beautiful. They have space for private parties, and overnight suites and executive suites are available.

Rodeway Inn Culpeper

Hotel | "Don't Stay"

Rodeway Inn Culpeper Photo, Culpeper, Virginia
Quote:
This hotel was picked simply because it was close to where we needed to be and the price. A very basic, no frill hotel. Two floors, and the rooms are accessed through the lobby. When you are at the front desk, you have to pick up the phone and dial a number to get someone to help you. A nuisance, but I especially didn't like that the two doors to the hotel were not locked at night and anyone could enter and get access to the hallway where the rooms were. The air worked fine, but the window unit was loud. The bathroom door was the ancient style with the push in lock, so of course we got locked out and had to call the desk. The hallways were pretty dimly lit. The tub was stopped up when taking a...Read More

Closed on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday - Saturday 4:30 - 9 pm, Sunday 11:30 - 9 pm. Reservations are recommended. The restaurant has been open since 1974, serving homemade German food. There portions are huge. Our server told us that the owner worked as a private chef for the King of Morocco before opening his own restaurant! Appetizers, salads, veal, sausages, trout, steaks, shrimp, and they have a special menu for the kids. Meals are served family style, and they have wonderful desserts; we had the black forest cake!

This place was easy to miss, but make sure you keep looking. Just as you pass the McDonalds, it's on the right. There is a big sign, but it's on the side of the building, and not where you would look for the restaurant. There are a few parking places in the front, but there is more parking in the rear. Anything fried you can order - loads of appetizers, salads, baked potatoes, BBQ, burgers, chicken salad, chops, chicken fingers, and sides. They have a kids menu, and you can get take out. They serve beer. We had BBQ sandwiches and ribs, and both were very good. Would definitely recommend.

The Frost Cafe is located at the corner of Davis and Main Streets. It opened as a drugstore in 1928, and still has a soda fountain and lunch counter. I was told the neon sign, pressed metal ceiling, and ceramic tile floors were original. The counter has 21 swivel stools. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and are reasonably priced. Breakfast can be ordered all day. We had breakfast, eggs, sausage, corned beef hash, pancakes, grits, and toast. All well prepared and tasty. They also have a working juke box and the little ones at the table that you can play for 50 cents!

Roaring Twenties Antique Car Museum

Attraction | "A Piece of History"

Roaring Twenties Antique Car Museum Photo, Madison, Virginia
Quote:
I joined Jack Nevitt and Al DeFelice from Virginia Photo Safaris (www.vaphotosafaris.com) for an HDR workshop. After going over some rules (use extra bug spray, don't stick your hands under or into cars because there could be snakes) we were left to explore on our own. The museum opened in 1967, and has antiques and car parts for sale. Vehicles date from 1890-1930's. In addition to the antique museum, there are some antique cars in the field behind the museum, which is what we were there to photograph! It was a little sad to see the old neglected cars rusting away in the field! Jack and Al were great at giving pointers about HDR photography, setting up shots, etc. A great experience, and I hope...Read More

Mrs. Rowe's opened in '47 and has been owned by the same family. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with affordable prices. This time we had lunch, and found it as tasty as breakfast is. I had fish and mac and cheese, cooked perfectly. Some other entrees are steak, seafood, chicken, and sandwiches. Many of the menu items are available refrigerated or frozen to take with you. They also have cookies, pies, and preserves in the gift shop. A great restaurant, with food like your grandma cooks!

Sanzone's Restaurant

Restaurant | "Great Italian Food"

Quote:
Sanzone's is always a must stop for us. It opened in 2004, and with the renovation, can seat 100. Long appetizer list - the mozzarella sticks are great. They have a kids menu. Large variety of salads, subs, and sandwiches - cheesesteaks are our favorites. They have all the Italian favorites - stuffed shells, tortellini, and manicotti are just a few. All are delicious. The owners and wait staff are very friendly, and the service is fast. I would definitely recommend you visit!

Next we spent a couple days in Charlottesville. We stayed in the Doubletree on Rt. 29. There is a bowling alley, movie theater, and loads of shopping nearby. The hotel has an inside pool, and you can't leave without getting some extra Doubletree cookies! They have a business center, ATM, baggage storage, bar, elevators, and a recreation desk. Checkout is 12 noon, and pets are allowed for a $25 fee. Hotel is next to a Walmart and Sam's Club. Staff is very friendly, and there is a restaurant and bar in the hotel. We always stay here when we visit Charlottesville. Restaurant recommendation - check out Mellow Mushroom Pizza near the UVA campus.

Fantastic German food! Meals are served family style, serving four people. Spatzle, cabbage, and green beans are served along with the entree you choose. It's easier to get the sampler and have a little taste of all the favorites. The desserts are also homemade and are delicious. The restaurant looks like a cabin in Germany, with beautiful flowers planted everywhere. At the intersection of I-64W and I81. Would highly recommend; we have never been disappointed.

Attraction | "Don't Miss!"

Quote:
It is impossible to come here and not find something to take home - unless you wait too late and it's all gone! Only open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. When it's all gone they don't make more until the next week. They are Amish and handbake everything in the store. They have breads, rolls, sticky buns, cakes, cinnamon rolls, pies, cookies, brownies, and whoopie pies They also carry some no sugar treats. They have a small selection of jellies, jams, and apple butter. The storefront is small, and if you didn't know to look for it, you would miss it. Very friendly family and worth the drive.

Quote:
The Cheese Shop opened in the '60's, when the Hershberger family sold cheese from their back porch. You can choose from a vast selection of meats, cheese, jams, jellies, candles, and bulk spices. We always make a visit before Thanksgiving to stock up on everything we need to cook for the holidays. They also have craft items. Since they are Amish, they aren't open on Sunday; open Monday - Friday 9 - 5:30, and Saturday 9 - 5. Occasionally they have food vendors on the weekends - kettle corn and brunswick stew are often for sale.
