Okay, first off, I’m not a huge beach person. I LOVE the idea of the beach but I never know what I’m supposed to do when I get there. Neither does my husband. Our son has a better understanding of it and is perfectly content to build sandcastles (he’s better at it than either one of us) and play with his cars. We try to read, but it’s too bright. I try to lay out but I get too uncomfortable and hot. I’m afraid of the water and don’t swim. I know, that’s weird for a Pisces. I missed the whole phase of lying there in my bikini with my boom box blaring Poison and for that that I am eternally sad. What I do enjoy doing is walking along the water, picking up shells, and looking at t...Read More

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

We love Margaritaville, especially in Vegas where it’s one of the more inexpensive places to eat. The one at Broadway at the Beach was no exception. Good food, reasonably priced, and a fun atmosphere. The first time we ate there we had a full meal. I had some pasta, the little guy had grilled cheese, and the husband had some kind of meat. We also shared a huge thing of loaded nachos as an appetizer because it’s hard to find those anymore. We didn’t have anything alcoholic to drink because, well, I was pregnant and it didn’t seem right. The only issue we had was that I was very obviously pregnant and yet they insisted on putting us on the top floor. There were a lot of stairs an...Read More

We love going to the aquarium and we absolutely adore the one in Gatlinburg. So when we saw that Myrtle Beach had a Ripley’s, too, we thought it would be a great way to spend the afternoon. This year, our son was really old enough to enjoy such a thing, although he’s had fun with it in the past, too. So…the pros…It was very clean and there was a nice variety of aquatic life. It had the fun things that we have come to expect such as the interactive areas, the sting rays, the divers, the café, the moving sidewalk that takes you under the water, and the large turtles. The cons…It wasn’t as big as the one in Gatlinburg. It seemed as though we wer...Read More

Broadway at the Beach

Attraction | "It was actually a little depressing"

Broadway at the Beach Photo, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

When my son saw the little rides at Broadway at the Beach he got excited. I did not. Every time we go to a fair he always works himself up about riding things and then psyche himself out once he gets on them. This time was no exception. So, there are a few rides for young children. The problem was that since it was the off-season the workers could care less about tending to them. We waited 15 minutes for someone to come and let him on the carousel. Of course, you have to buy tickets so there we were, a handful of tickets, and nothing to ride. Eventually, someone came over and let him on and he was pretty excited about that. In fact, he rode it twice. It was kind of sad, though...Read More

Dragon Lair Fantasy Golf

Attraction | "A fun way to spend an hour with the family"

Dragon Lair Fantasy Golf Photo, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Quote:
We had never taken our son to play mini golf before and my husband had been itching to do it. I had reservations about this because my son has the attention span of a flea and my husband takes his mini golf very seriously. But, we decided to give it a shot. There was little else going on and I had a coupon for the Dragon’s lair Fantasy Golf at Barefoot Landing. So, it was pretty chilly that day and we mostly had the place to ourselves. That’s a good thing because our son was kind of all over the place. He did very well, though, and actually got a hole in one at one point. (I am not kidding.) The course was very well-maintained and interesting and we had a good time. The constantly erupting...Read More

Hotel | "It's a condo, but it's not bad "

We stayed at this resort on the advice of a friend and all in all I would have to say that we were pretty pleased with it. For starters, it’s set up like a typical condo unit. We had a one bedroom but it was in the newer part and we were on the 16th floor. With an oceanfront room we had a great view of…the ocean. Seriously, it was very nice. Panorama all the way. The living area had a large television screen with a couch, coffee table, and dining room table for four. It was a little small, but it worked. The kitchen was fully stocked and the bathroom large enough to move around comfortable in. Our tub had jets but I didn’t use them. The bedroom had 2 queen beds, a large closet,...Read More

Why We Went There

Every year, we do what thousands, if not millions, of Americans do and use a portion of our tax refund to take ourselves on a much needed vacation. This year, we went to Myrtle Beach. I must say, it’s not a destination that we placed high on our list of places to go. In fact, I often make fun of it. (I’m sorry, I just can’t get the image of Jake Gyllenhall’s mother saying that she’s going to move there in the film "October Sky" out of my mind whenever I think of it.) Anyway, with me being pregnant and supposedly on bed rest and us wanting something different we decided to do the regional thing this year. I’ve always kind of viewed Myrtle Beach as the place to go when you can’t really affor...Read More
