I will start with a bias against shop after shop, tourist trap after tourist trap . . . for a far as the eye can see. Add to that arriving on Friday of a major American three day holiday and it is a recipe for disappointment. We arrived into downtown Gatlinburg around 8:00pm after being on the road since around 9:30am from Lake Lure, NC. Unfortunately for us, the weather was cool and foggy, with terrible viewing for most of the day. Having done the Blue Ridge Parkway up in Virginia in the fall of 2009, I really had big expectations for our transition day from NC to TN. It simply wasn't to be. The day of driving had taken its toll and everyone was pretty tired and a bit on the cranky sid...Read More

We left Lake Lure NC heading for the Blue Ridge Parkway and ultimately the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With really poor weather in North Carolina, we were looking forward to hopefully driving out from under the fog and clouds and into the clear in the Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.We picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville and headed towards Cherokee. Before reaching there, however, we turned off to take the Balsam Mountain loop road which is just inside the Smoky Mountains National Park, still within NC.The start of the loop road was paved and two lanes. Just beyond a picnic area, it became a "primitive" one lane gravel and dirt road....Read More

After our week in Lake Lure, our plans included taking the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville down to near Cherokee where we would enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The weather the night before our departure from Lake Lure was very stormy and with the storms came much cooler temperatures. For the locals and tourists alike, folks were happy to have a break from the 85-90F temps. What we didn't really want or need was the dense fog that would result. We left Lake Lure around 9:30am taking the scenic route out of town. Yes that is a very redundant comment as every route to or from Lake Lure is beautiful, but we chose to take a bit of an out of the way route from Lake Lure to Ch...Read More

Having had to bypass the restaurant "in town" where we had a Restaurant.com gift certificate, the lady at the front desk of our hotel suggested this place. We were happy with it and glad she did.We arrived at around 8:40pm and were surprised at just how busy they still were at that hour. I suppose with it being the Friday of the Memorial Day weekend, the city was jammed with tourists. We were seated promptly but our server Kyle was a bit on the slow side to get to us to take our meal order after getting beverages to us.Once we had ordered, our meal started pretty quickly first with dinner salads and very fluffy dinner rolls. Mom ordered a chef's salad for her meal along wit...Read More

Having spent a week in a timeshare unit where we prepared our morning meals before going out for the day, it was nice to have a break from cereals and english muffins to enjoy a good hot home cooked southern breakfast.I just love country ham, to my meal choice was easy . . . scrambled eggs with a decent size center cut of ham along with biscuits and sausage gravy. Not a fan of the gravy, I gave the small bowl to David to add to his meal. He had the eggs & bacon w/ biscuits and gravy while Mom had the eggs benedict. We were all very pleased with the quality and taste of our meals. I felt that the prices were a bit high, however. Most were $9.95 and with a beverage (coffee...Read More

Hotel | "Nice Riverside Location"

The best thing about this hotel was its location away from all of the touristy hub-bub in the downtown main street area. It is located about a mile away and very conveniently along the river. We had a room with two queen sized beds as David's mom was travelling with us. I found them to be rather comfortable for a budget type hotel. The pillows however were on the skimpy side so we were all happy we were traveling with our personal pillows too.On the top floor, our view from the balcony was nice. Inside, there was a lovely wood burning fireplace with plenty of chopped wood outside on the balcony. Our room also had a small dorm sized refrigerator as well as a microwave....Read More
