Groningen in the North of Holland has some excellent museums with the Groninger museum being one of my favourite all time museums anywhere in the world. Another good museum is the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum or the Northern Maritime Museum or the non Dutch speakers is a fascinating museum that offers a glimpse into the cities seafaring past. Although the museum is excellent it isn't very well publicised so it might pay to pop into the tourist information centre that is located on the fischmarkt in town and pick up a map. The msueum is housed in a series of 15th century warehouses next to a particularly scenic canal that houses a lot of boats. Entry is 4 Euros for adults ...Read More

Attraction | "A medieval tower preserved in time "

The symbol of the city of Groningen is the Martini Tower which was built in the mid 1400's. It is actually the third tower to occupy the site after the previous two were destroyed by lightening. The Martini Tower is such a focal point in Groningen as most of the city is built quite low so you can see the tower for miles around and is great for getting your barings. It stands at 97 meres although this is not it's original height as it had a few problems over the years. It really hasn't been the luckiest tower so far. The tower is located in the Grote Markt which is the main square of the city and is actually part of the Martini church next door though you can visit the tower without e...Read More

Holland Casino Groningen

Attraction | "Not exactly Vegas but fun all the same "

Quote:
The Holland Casino in Groningen is a popular place to go on a friday and saturday night. It is located just out of the city centre near the main shopping street and directly across from the Eden city hotel and a few different bars and restaruants. If you are driving there is a large underground car park under the casino which for people who have been to Groningen in ideal as parking is at a premium in the city. You need to be a member to be able to enter the casino but this is a fairy easy process and a membership card can be done instantly with only your passport needed for proof of identity. There is fee for entering the casino but depending on what night you visit this can vary an...Read More

Restaurant | "Decent cafe but terrible service "

The news cafe in Groningen is an extremely popular cafe in Groningen that is always busy and especially in Summer when it an be difficut to get a seat at it's outdoor terrace. Part of the reason of it's popularity is it's location in the Grote Markt which is the centre of the city and the easiest place to stop and get a coffee whilst shopping. The menu is quite extensive and they have a large selection of hot and cold drinks available and a huge selection of different teas as the Dutch are passionate about their tea and unlike the British don't add milk to it. It is open from quite early in the morning right up until very late at night and is an ok place to get some breakfast o...Read More

Pannekoekschip Groningen

Restaurant | "fun and a little bit different"

Quote:
The pannkoekschip or the pancake ship as it would be called in English is a strange little restaurant that is housed on a small boat in the Dutch city of Groningen. It is located on a canal just outside of the city centre and I actually just found it by chance one day whilst walking and it would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it.The ship it is housed in is quite an old ship and by no means is it grand. Entrance to the ship is by way of a plank and it most definately isn't wheelchair friendly. Inside the decoration is sparse with only wooden benches and tables but to be honest this just adds to the charm of the place especially as night when candles are lit and the o...Read More
