Hotel | "Swanning Around in Arundel"

Quote:
Once or twice a year I have to go and visit a factory in West Sussex which belongs to the company for which I work. If I have the choice, I usually ask for a hotel in Arundel because it’s a lovely little town where I love to just wander around in the evening and soak up the atmosphere. I’ve previously stayed at the Town House and the Arundel House so this time I was looking for somewhere else to try and I picked The Swan. Confusingly there are two hotels called the Swan in Arundel – The Swan in the town centre and the White Swan further out of the town. The one I am reviewing is The Swan Hotel on the High Street. I booked the room through Hotels.com and got a generous cash back of around £5 on my room...Read More

Downton Cuckoo Fair

Attraction | "All the Fun of the Fair"

Downton Cuckoo Fair Photo, Downton, Hertfordshire
Quote:
It was my Mum’s idea to go to the Downton Cuckoo Fair. "You’ll love it" she said and then I promptly forgot that we’d agreed to go and my husband made other plans. I called her a few days before the fair and said we were thinking of going to one of the National Trust properties near her. "But you can’t" she said, "we’re going to the Cuckoo Fair. We ALWAYS go to the Cuckoo Fair". I’d never been before. Despite the impression being given that the DCF had been going since the year dot, it turned out that the fair actually only started 32 years ago so I didn’t feel quite so ashamed for never having been. 32 years ago I was 14 and would have considered something like this totally lame and been ...Read More

Restaurant | "Take your Mama to Wagamama?"

Quote:
A few months ago, before my mother had her hip replacement operation, I invited her out for lunch. My sister had suggested that I take her to Wagamama in Salisbury because she felt certain that there would be something on the menu that Mum could eat. At that time she was following a strange and very complicated diet to reduce the pain from her arthritis which discouraged her from eating lots of mainstream food ingredients including wheat, tomatoes, potatoes and lots of other great stuff. My sister reasoned that Wagamama had lots of different types of noodles that were sure to include rice noodles which wouldn’t be a problem for her.I’m not sure how long Salisbury has had a Wagamama but I’v...Read More

You'll Believe a Bear Can Fly

Story/Tip

Showing Pooh what to expect Photo, Salisbury, England
Quote:
My friend Pooh was always destined to fly. My husband adopted him for me on our first anniversary, noting that I needed someone to keep an eye on me when I was travelling. In nearly 13 years since then, he’s been a bear who ‘gets about a bit’, a bear who’s not bothered by rub-down searches or life in the overhead locker. He’s a fearless little fella but he was somewhat taken aback when we challenged him to jump off a high place in the interests of proving his bravery and raising money for charity. It came about by pure fluke. My husband and I went to visit my parents in Salisbury for the long weekend of the Royal Wedding. Walking through the Cathedral Close I spotted a poster advertising a ...Read More

Restaurant | "Something Different? It certainly was"

Quote:
My husband and I travel to India for holidays most years. I am, as a result, a bit of a curry bore and I rarely eat Indian in restaurants in the UK because there's such a dreadful tendency for things to be very formulaic. You can predict the menu, the décor, the behaviour of the staff without even stepping through the door. But sometimes the curry urge comes upon me and nothing else will do. Today when my step-father asked what we fancied for lunch in Salisbury I told him it had to be Indian and lucky for me he was more than happy to go along with the suggestion. We'd been to Anokaa once before, two or three years ago and I recalled that it had been pretty good. We parked up in the main cov...Read More
