Folkestone Marine Park and Reserve is located on the West Coast of Barbados in St. James Parish. Driving onto the grounds, there is a large lawn with picnic tables and beautiful shady trees where locals were enjoying picnic lunches. Once at the end of the drive, there is ample parking for the Park and Beach. In the main building there is a rental shop, souvenir shop and museum. We did not visit the musuem, but used the rental shop for a mask and snorkel to replace mine which had met with a sea burial during a riptide mishap earlier in the week. The price to rent the mask and snorkel was $14 BDS per day, so if you arrive when they open at 8:30 a.m. you could keep your gear until 4:30 p...Read More

Some locals invited my husband and I to visit the Village Bar in St. Johns, Barbados for Saturday lunch. The Village Bar (Lemon Arbour) is located in the countryside with pleasant views of plantation land and a gentle breeze coming through the patio. It's definitely a hot spot for residents of the island - especially on a Saturday. You enter the Village Bar and are greeted with a menu board, including the day's specials. The menu included the obligatory fish dishes, stews, and sides. It also featured some dishes unique to Barbados like pudding and souse, sea cat (octopus), conch and cou cou. Once you've decided on your selections, you order at the bar and the food is brought out to you...Read More

We visited Blakey's restaurant one evening for dinner. We had heard from fellow travellers that it was affordable and tasty. The menu offered a variety of local dishes, as well as more American fare. The traditional Bajan dishes included pepperpot, fried flying fish, mac pie, and fish cakes. For travellers that want a taste of home, they had some pasta dishes, burgers, ice cream and the like. The restaurant is located right beside the boardwalk, near a gazebo where on occasion a band plays. The atmosphere was lively and the servers were very friendly and accommodating. Our table had a few rounds of the local beer, Banks, and some fish cakes as a starter. The...Read More

Carlisle Bay Harbor and Marine Park

Attraction | "Excellent Snorkelling Opporunities Within Reach of the Beach"

Carlisle Bay Harbor and Marine Park Photo, Bridgetown, Barbados

A morning excursion to Carlisle Bay for some snorkelling certainly did not disappoint! Carlisle Bay is located on the southwest coast of Barbados. It is a site for several shipwrecks - some boats meeting with misfortune, others being intentionally sunk here to provide sanctuary for local sealife and great opportunities for snorkellers and scuba divers alike. There are six shipwrecks in Carlisle Bay ranging in depth from 29 feet under, to 120 feet. Local catamaran operators stop here to allow their patrons to snorkel and often feed the sea turtles, so timing your visit around this can often lead to seeing more than later in the afternoon. It's not too difficult to swim out from the bea...Read More

We'd heard good things about the Fisherman's Pub in Speightstown, Barbados from other local tourists, so on a drive up the West Coast we stopped in for some lunch. You start by selecting your choices from the buffet where you are served. Offerings during our visit included traditional 'mac pie', curried shark, fried flying fish, cou cou, and various other local favorites. Each item was individually priced from $3 Bds (about $1.50 US) up to $10 Bds ($5 US). Three of us had hearty meals and drinks for $32.00 US including tip. We brought our meals to a table over-looking the ocean. To our right was a picturesque pier and a moored catamaran. To our left, a natural rocky curve ...Read More
