Attraction | "The fields where the kings of Poland where crowned"

The Obelisk Electio Virtim is a monument that I can see from my apartment window. I have often seen groups of people come to visit it taking photographs, usually at weekends. I just assumed it was something to do with the Jewish Ghetto and was a monument on the tour of the Ghetto. Today, I decided to investigate. It's not a very brightly coloured obelisk - grey concrete with a black embossed metal plate showing three figures. At the top of the obelisk is a crown. The area in which the obelisk stands is circular and cobbled. Around the edge of the cobbles are concrete squares with the embossed letters spelling out ELECTIO VIRTIM. There are a few flower boxes which are empty at the moment and...Read More

Here we are again on my favourite and the oldest street in Warsaw, Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street. The reason I spend so much time here is because the street is lined with some fine ancient houses and fantastic monuments. This medium sized statue can easily be missed although it isn't far from the monument of Adam Mickiewicz, Poland's national poet. The baroque statue stands on a very large plinth in a small area that is fenced off; like a small garden with ornate lamps, trees and shrubs. The Holy Mother is facing you as you pass by the church of Saint Anne but she is slightly situated to the left of the main thoroughfare and I think this is one of the reasons she can easily be missed....Read More

Cathedral Square (Kanonia) Photo, Warsaw, Poland

The name Cathedral Square may give the impression that the area I am about to review is one of grandeur. Well, the square is certainly very pretty especially when the sun is low in the sky on a winters morning making the reflections on the pastel shaded houses golden and mellow. There is also some history connected with this small triangular square behind the cathedral in the Stare Miasto in Warsaw.Kanonia or Cathedral Square is the site of the former cemetery, which existed there until 1889. The only relic of the cemetery is a rococo statue of The Mother of God, dated 1771. The houses of the Curia and Cathedral Chapter surrounding the square were reconstructed after the Second World War...Read More

This monument built to honour Jan Kilinski now stands proudly on Podwale Street but it hasn't always been in the same location. In fact the monument has been moved three times. In 1935 when it was first unveiled it was positioned on Krasinski Square (Plac Krasinskich). During the German occupation the monument was torn down and badly damaged and hidden away from sight in the National Museum. Members of the Warsaw underground found out about the hiding place and through their dogged perseverance eventually had the monument placed in a new location on 3rd May Avenue (al. 3 Maja). Then in 1959 it was moved to its present location, at the junction of Piekarska and Podwale Street.Jan Killinski ...Read More

Attraction | "A touch of Academia on Miodowa street"

Collegium Nobilium Photo, Warsaw, Poland
Quote:
The Collegium Nobilum is a building situated on Miodowa street at Number 22/24. It was built in 1743 and reconstructed in a Neoclassical design in 1786. Miodowa Street has many fantastic buildings including several palaces but this one is still an eye opener especially with a giant sized hand looming from one of the top terraces. In the year of 1749 a Piarist monk and great scholar, Stanislaw Konarski set up an exclusive school to educate the sons of the nobility. The school's curriculum included extensive courses in foreign languages, history, law, mathematics, physics and geography. The school was active until1832 and was responsible for shaping numerous notable Polish citizens....Read More
