On arrival in Ironbridge, the home of Britain’s Industrial Heritage, we first visited the Museum of the Gorge and I think it is a good place to start. Parking is outside the museum – the parking is run by the local authority and they dictate the prices, but it is reasonable. When you first walk into the museum you mainly see a shop selling gifts and books. We knew we wanted to visit some of the other museums in the area so stopped to ask about purchasing a ‘Passport’ to all the open museums (some are closed seasonally). Here we found the staff very helpful and informative. We could pay £3.60 as an adult to see the museum or £21.95 to get a passport to all museums. There are discounts available fo...Read More

Jackfield Tile Museum

Attraction | "Tile History"

This unusual museum is on the site of a former tile factory in Ironbridge, and another influential manufacturer was nearby. The museum acknowledges the work these two businesses (Maw & co and Craven Dunnill) did from the early Victorian era till the 1960s when demand declined. Car Parking is outside for a nominal fee. The ticket is re-usable in most other Ironbridge museum car parks for the same day. It is signposted throughout the small town of Ironbridge and from other historical sites in the area so you should have no trouble finding it. You enter via the shop which shows modern tiles and associated gifts for sale and also has a small coffee shop. To visit this museum only co...Read More

I remember visiting here on a school trip about 25 years ago (eek!) and really enjoying it, so on a recent short break in the area we decided to see if it had changed much. The site is an open-air ‘living’ Victorian museum and all the staff are dressed appropriately for the era. It is signposted from the town of Ironbridge and there is parking on site. There is a fee for parking, I don’t recall the amount but I think it was quite reasonable as your ticket is valid all day in any of the other Ironbridge museum car parks except the Museum of the Gorge (details are at the ticket machine). It is open daily 10am – 4pm. To visit here alone it costs £14.90 which is quite a lot of money. If yo...Read More

Merrythought Teddy Bear Shop

Whilst visiting Ironbridge in Shropshire recently we were handed a local map by the staff at the Museum of the Gorge. Marked on the map was a Teddy Bear Shop just down the road from the museum. As we still had time on our parking ticket we had a wander down to check it out. The shop is actually owned by Merrythought, one of the UK’s premier hand made toy companies and is dedicated to their collectable bears. The extremely helpful assistant was passionate about teddies and the brand and told us all about the history of the company. Merrythought were established in Ironbridge in the 1930s making handmade teddies and other furry animals which were stocked in Harrods, Hamley’s and other ...Read More

Having enjoyed visiting Shropshire last New Year with a group of friends, we decided a return visit was on the cards. Unable to get into the same place as before, our friend found West Hope Country Retreats which was in the same sort of area. West Hope Middle Farm is a family owned working farm which now offers high spec self-catering accommodation. It is based a few miles from Craven Arms on the A49, which in turn is about 8 miles north of Ludlow. We were staying in the Olde Cowshed which sleeps four, and the others were in The Stables which slept six people. We paid £240 per couple for the Olde Cowshed for the week. To get to West Hope you will have to drive through narrow country l...Read More
