During our stay, a group of us went out to dinner at the Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC for short) because it was about three blocks from our hotel. It was at the recommendation of our hotel's front desk since we were also looking for someplace that would be informal yet accepting reservations. Our group had seven folks with pretty eclectic dining interests. Some went for the local flavor which included something called "Hot Brown" - a variation of the turkey open faced sandwich with melted cheddar jack cheese and alfredo sauce. It looked like way too much stuff on a plate for my tastes, so I was glad I went with the pulled pork BBQ sandwich (which I ordered plain with no extra sauces li...Read More

At the end of our USYSA Workshop weekend, the Wisconsin group typically enjoys a nice "thank you" dinner event hosted by our president. This year we went to the Maker's Mark Bourbon House & Lounge, which was very good.We enjoyed a leisurely dining experience, sampling all courses from appetizers (shrimp cocktail, rock shrimp popcorn, warm goat cheese skillet and fried green tomatoes); salads (caesars, cobb or wedge); entrees (steaks, ribs, and crab cakes); and yummy desserts (bread pudding, apple ginger crumble and bourbon balls). All side dishes were additional ala carte and served family style . . . so our group of 10 added yukon mashed potatoes, corn fritters, braised greens and sea...Read More

Located in the heart of the city, the Marriott Hotel is a very convenient location connected to their convention center and just blocks from the Fourth Street Live entertainment district. In town for another soccer conference, this hotel provided US Youth Soccer with plenty of meeting space including two very nice ballrooms. They also offer guests two restaurants for dining options.Blu is the nicer of the two featuring Italian cuisine in the evening, while their breakfast menu is pretty much the standard fare including a very comprehensive buffet for $15.95. I thoroughly enjoyed breakfast each morning whether it included the made-to-order omelet or fresh lox and bagels. The fruit (pine...Read More

I’ve always found this chain to be hit and miss. Unfortunately with two dining experiences (one lunch and one dinner) I came away from this location to be a clear miss and one I would not recommend to others. It is one thing to be slow on the service side, it is entirely another to serve food that is clearly not what the customer ordered. I was also appalled that while carrying the loaded tray, our server didn’t realize that her hair was hanging into a plate of pasta and meatballs . . . but I’m getting ahead of myself here. After our first full day of workshop sessions, our small group of lady friends (five in total) took the three block walk down to this restaurant. While we were told...Read More

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is comprised of seven distilleries found in the scenic bluegrass state. We found Bardstown to be the ideal central point to explore the Bourbon Trail, especially with the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center providing a historical backdrop to the American art of bourbon making. At Heaven Hill, guests have the opportunity to walk through a historical overview of bourbon in this reason of the country, along with their own personal brand history. They also have a short (probably 15 minute) video that tells the Evan Williams' brand history and the other products produced here at Heaven Hill Distilleries. After the video, guests are walked across the street to the ba...Read More

My first business trip of the new job took me back to Lexington, Kentucky. While the weekend was filled with a lot of obligatory work meetings, one that was an especially fun outing was our Saturday afternoon at Keeneland Race Track. It was a beautiful fall day, with clear sunny skies. While David and I had been to Lexington back in May of this year, it was nice to experience the other thing that Kentucky’s known for besides bourbon . . . horse racing.Keeneland is one of the oldest horse racing facilities in Kentucky and they say lovelier than the much more famous Churchill Downs over in Louisville. Arriving at Keeneland, the tree lined drive creates an ambience of exclusivity and prof...Read More
