Quote: More than a century ago, the discovery of gold triggered a massive gold rush to Charters Towers, which grew to become the second largest city in Queensland. While its importance has shrunk since then, the availability of tourist activities has grown. Here are some that we thoroughly recommend.

Leahton Park is an 1100 acre property situated 10 minutes from Charters Towers right in the heart of cattle country. While only a small property by Queensland standards, it gives guests the chance to experience a station stay or a day visit with a difference. Leahton Park is home to the largest herd of purebred Texas Longhorns in Australia - and the award winning Texas Longhorn Wagon Tour. From May 2011 visitors can stay in a comfortable air conditioned bunkhouse and enjoy a unique ‘Queensland Outback’ experience. Hearty camp oven cooked meals are served from the back of a genuine Cowboy Chuck Wagon. Take an informative tour of the Bethel Saddlery saddle shop and help harness the draft hor...Read More

There are several things which should not be missed when visiting Charters Towers and The Miner’s Cottage is near the top of that list. The old Miner's Cottage building is a typical example of a late 1800's workers cottage. These timber-framed "inside/outside" homes were a common sight in the early days of this town. In fact many hundreds of these dwellings were constructed between 1880 and 1920. The Miner's Cottage (also known as O'Kanes cottage) is situated on its original site in the heritage precinct of Charters Towers. It was once the home of a very colourful character, Thadeus O’Kane’s daughter-in-law. O’Kane was a very influential man in town as the proprietor and editor of the...Read More

The Visitor Information should be your first stop in Charters Towers. The building you see today was first built for the Queensland National Bank in the 1889s. The timber building was later sold to the Union Bank and physically moved to its present site. Since then, the building has been moved backwards and forwards on this site three times. In 1996 it was restored to its original condition and the Visitor Information Centre was established. In 2003 it was refurbished to its current condition as part of the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail. This Ghosts of Gold heritage Trail is one of Charters Towers most prized tourist attractions. It covers four distinct venues around the city – the Visitor ...Read More

The Stock Exchange Arcade is one of the most interesting heritage buildings in Charters Towers. It was built in 1888 as a shopping arcade called the Royal Arcade but it became home to the Charters Towers stock exchange in 1890 and it served this purpose for nearly 40 years. In its heyday the cards were called three times a day, six days a week on the arcade floor. The exchange is a great open thoroughfare and it is easy to imagine the stockbrokers busy at work in their offices. An aboriginal horse boy called Jupiter discovered gold at the foot of Towers Hill in 1871. A town was quickly established and it soon turned into a bustling city. In its heyday it was the second largest city in the s...Read More

Audio Tour

Story/Tip

We had heard about the self-drive audio tour of the town and were keen to do it. We found that we could rent or purchase a CD and map and discover the hidden treasures of Charters Towers at our own pace. This proved to be an excellent way of navigating the town and we certainly learned new things and saw places we would never have known about without the CD.We decided to rent, so we paid our $5.00 and left a $10 deposit and in return were given a CD and a map. We put the CD in the car player and were told where to go. So that you can travel at your own pace it is necessary to stop the CD on many occasions but this worked well and we started a new track each time we reached one of the 20 or...Read More
