Like any other time in a big crowd, avoid those places where you have some folks that are not able to handle their liquor. They are always easy to spot, and usually easy to hear, and on parade says – can be men or women. There are many better places to be drunk that at an afternoon Mardi Gras parade with three lines of security that includes officers from throughout the state of Alabama. But there are always that certain percent of the crowd that never learns the lesson. The police are there and backed off a ways to ensure that people can have a fun time – and not have to have a few folks ruin it for everyone else. I see many great scenes ever year, and you are left shaking your head wondering just ...Read More

Before you arrive, make sure you have a bag with you for all your throws you will catch. A flimsy grocery bag will likely break after a couple of hours. Make sure you bring along either a tougher type plastic bag (such as you get from most stores other than a grocery store) or a small mesh bag. You may easily find yourself with 5 or more pounds of throws in a bag! A small daypack works perfectly as well, and is good if you are bring in some of your own drinks, and can fill it up as you are emptying it. Realize that you will be doing a lot of walking and a lot of standing on the day you go to the parade. If there are two of you, then you can expect to find a place to sit on a park bench by...Read More

I often get some questions on the basics of what should one do during a Mardi Gras parade. Each city is a little different, and each parade is a little different, and of course there is a difference between day and night parades. The information from my tips comes from years of having gone to Mardi Gras parades along the Gulf Coast, as well as having ridden in many parades with the Krewe of Campeche in Pensacola. One of the most important decisions is choosing where you actually are going to be for a parade. The areas I recommend looking at are from Spanish Plaza to S. Cedar Street. Either side of the street will usually have a pretty good crowd for day parades – but not as big as those ar...Read More

As Ash Wednesday and Lent once more approach, from Saturday through Fat Tuesday in the historical area of downtown, tens of thousands of people fill the areas around the barricaded off the tree lined Government Street parade routes and await incoming throws from passing floats. The cheaper multi-colored beads thrown in other cities are considered skimpy fare in Mobile, where floats are piled high with stuffed animals of all sizes, toys, candy, and of course – moon pies. If you came looking for the Mardi Gras of the Girls Gone Wild, you are in the wrong place. The heavy police presence should immediately let you know that such is not tolerated in Mobile, even though you can actually drink from an...Read More

One of the greatest tips that you can get for Mardi Gras is on how to plan for parking. There are few worse things than getting off I-10 and finding a sea of cars and terrible traffic and all that without a clue as to where you can go and park to watch the Mardi Gras Parades. To make it worse for the wear – you will see most of the streets around Government Street with the No Parking during parades signs up – and yes – they will tow your car if you decide to park there. It is key to understand that each day brings bigger crowds and that it will always effect where you can park. If you understand that Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday are the big days, and that the others will vary, then you can pla...Read More
