A September 1999 trip
to Tehran by walkman
Quote: Some people says that metropole of Iran, Tehran is not too nice city. I agree. Still I like it. It's quite polluted, there's not too much to do, it's overcrowded. Although I like it. I like it because of people.

Mosques of Tehran
I was walking along the street in the central part of Tehran when suddenly a car (white Peykan) stopped beside me. Two guys in something like uniforms asked me for my passport. They told me that they were police and showed me some ID card written in Farsi with script 'POLICE' in Latin.
And I showed them. They asked me to show them everything I had in my bag. They told that they caught one Italian and one Dutch guy carrying some heroin and fake money so they were searching for their companions. So I showed them my bag. After that they wanted to see my money. I refused and they started to be angry. After 5 minutes of speaking I showed them my money. And it was my great mistake! How could I be so stupid? I don't know... Guys counted my money, they were touching it from all sides and after that they gave it back to me. My bad luck was that I had huge bunch of small 1 USD bank notes prepared for Russian police bribes. When guys returned me my money, they told me 'Welcome to Tehran!' and went away. After I counted my money again, I found that three 50 USD notes are missing. Great! So they left me with 40 USD in Tehran, 9000km from my bank! 'Never mind' - I told myself and continued to enjoy Iran. And it was worth those 150 USD. Still this is something of a warning to other travellers. POLICE IN IRAN NEVER CHECK FOREIGNERS WITHOUT REASON (only when you are speaking with woman ;>)!!! SHOW YOUR PASSPORT AND MONEY TO SOMEONE ONLY AT THE POLICE STATION!!! AND SO ON... If I had read a LP guide where the same story is written, I wouldn't have lost my money. But I cannot blame anyone except myself...
