As I explained in a previous journal on Durham, the city used to be big in the tobacco industry. There were numerous tobacco companies that flourished here at the beginning of the last century and often had large tobacco warehouses. Since this is Durham and not Charlotte, investors decided rather than tear down these buildings they would give them a second life as entertainment complexes, much like they did with the American Tobacco Campus. And the same was done with Brightleaf Square. Between 1900-1904 the buildings were erected as part of a campaign for the American Tobacco Campus to store tobacco. The warehouses were the Yuille and Watts buildings named after George W. Watts and Thomas ...Read More

Before heading back home, I wanted to take my mom to do a bit of shopping and grab a bite to eat before our 3 hours drive back home. Fishmonger’s was recommend by several resources and it was near Brightleaf Square. Since 1983, Fishmonger’s has been serving up some of the areas finest seafood to locals, students, visitors, and locals alike. Of course most of the menu is limited to seafood. There are fish, shrimp, scallops, oysters, and crabs. And you will find those in po’ boy sandwiches, other sandwiches, entrees, baskets, and pots. Non-seafood lovers have only a couple of options with burgers, BBQ, and a few sandwiches. Vegetarians/vegans have vegetable plates. Mom and I scan...Read More

Before heading back home, I planned for my mom and I to attend services at the renowned and beautiful Duke Chapel. The chapel is at the center of religious life on campus, but draws visitors from all over the world. The chapel was constructed from 1930 to 1932, though the idea for the chapel started in 1825. The building has a capacity for 1800 people. It was one of the last buildings to be built on the west campus. The first time it was used would be for commencement in 1932, but it would not be formally dedicated until June 2, 1935. Julian Abele designed the building. The building is constructed of stone from nearby Duke Quarry and limestone. While the chapel has ties to the Method...Read More

On the grounds of one of the top universities you will find centuries old buildings, leading medical research technology, and some of the brightest students in the country. But you will also find 55 acres of sheer bliss and harmony at the stunning Sarah P Duke Gardens. The idea for the gardens started back in the 1920’s but funds for those plans on hold for a while. The idea resurfaced again in the 1930’s by one of the original faculty, Dr. Fredric M. Hanes. He had a love of gardens and wanted to see the debris filled ravine turned into something beautiful. Sarah P. Duke, the window of the founder of the university, donated $20,000 to the gardens that would bear her name. In 1935 more than...Read More

Since I can get great rates at Marriott, I wanted to make sure our first mom and daughter weekend would be the utmost in luxury. So I booked us a room at the incredible Marriott Research Triangle Park. Mom and I arrived and checked into the hotel. Check in and out was a breeze. The lobby here is just beautiful.
