One of the more well-known places to eat a hearty, traditional, well-priced meal in the Oltrarno is Trattoria Casalinga. Located just off the side of the Piazza Santo Spirito, locals and tourists alike flock to the spacious, noisy, often-packed dining spot for a filling dinner.Last time I spent time in Florence, I was living in the Oltrarno area for about a month and a half, and had quite a lot of opportunities to explore this area, which I'd missed when I lived in Florence before on the main side of the river. Caslinga came up several times when I would ask around about where to eat. "Housewife" in Italian, Casalinga is very much like coming home to a meal the wife of the house has prepar...Read More

Restaurant | "One of My Favorite Dining Places"

I was lucky enough to visit Sant'Agostino23 in the height of the famous "tartufo" (truffle) season. A friend of mine who a local and lives in the Santo Spirito neighborhood of the Oltrarno area of Florence, recommended we eat here one night. So glad we did, as it made it to the top of my list of favorite dining places in the city.Located just a block away from the Piazza Santo Spirito, Sant'Agostino23 is a uniquely designed place that's cozy, funky, and lively. It feels like a family among the guests, bar-tender, servers, and chefs. We asked what they recommended for the evening, and of course truffle dishes were number one on the list. They'd just received a delivery of fresh ...Read More

Canapone Club Ristorante

Restaurant | "Eccentric & Amazing in S.Spirito"

Quote:
One of the favorite places among the locals 'in the know' on the Oltrarno area of Florence is the private "restaurant club" Canapone. There are many of these club type restaurants in the city, and mainly they are set apart for tax reasons, so guests must be a "member" to dine. Don't worry, though, as it's not as exclusive as it sounds. Most places, you'll just have to fill out a small info card and pay a membership fee (many are just around 5euro), then with your card you can get into any club spots in that same association.Canapone is well worth the membership fee, as it's a unique, off the beaten path, local-filled place. The owners are eccentric, as is the place (but not ove...Read More

If you're looking for a nice place in the Oltrarno, that is bustling, full of life, and perfect for people-watching - then head over to Piazza Santo Spirito. In this large square, you're always sure to find something going on - whether it is a market, street performers, or just lots of locals gathering for an evening stroll.Along the side of the square, there's a restaurant which offers a nice outdoor seating area, and plenty of cozy booths inside as well. Trattoria Borgo Antico may seem a bit tourist-centered at first, but after visiting there several times with a friend who lives in the neighborhood, meeting the manager, and trying the food - it gets my vote. The prices are mo...Read More

Restaurant | "Best Mozzarella in Town"

Before my last trip to Florence, a friend had recommended a place that I just "had to try" in the San Niccolo area. Supposedly they had the most amazing mozzarella salad...but the only problem was that she couldn't remember the name, only the approximate location. The street where it is located is filled with a handful of restaurants, and so I glanced at each menu trying to find something with mozzarella that looked unusually good.I couldn't really find anything list from any cafe in the area that was more than the basic caprese salad or margarita pizza. I actually ate at two places beside BevoVino before I tried this place, because it is listed as an "enoteca" (wine bar). Yes, they have f...Read More
