Restaurant | "A Florentine Heaven for Vegetarians"

The first strictly vegetarian restaurant in Florence, Il Vegetariano offers a fresh, daily menu of some of the tastiest veggie and vegan plates around. As vegetarians ourselves, when we lived in Italy, we'd had this place on our "must go" list for a long time and were so excited when we finally tried it.Opened since 1981, this restaurant, which sits just a couple blocks from the heart of the city offers a wonderful array of vegetarian dishes in the Tuscan style. All dishes are freshly made onsite and vary from appetizers to desserts. Organic ingredients are included and many fun drink options are available from wines, beers, and teas. There's just one thing about this place tha...Read More

Libreria Brac (Brac Libreria di Arte Contemporanea)

Restaurant | "Comtemporary Art & Vegetarian Cuisine"

Libreria Brac (Brac Libreria di Arte Contemporanea) Photo, Florence, Italy

One of the places on the top of my list to visit during my last visit to Florence, Italy was the newer vegetarian cafe called Brac. Self-described as a "library of contemporary art, coffee and cooking" this unique place is tucked away on a Florentine alleyway, and is the perfect getaway for a lazy afternoon. The first time I went looking for Brac, I had a hard time finding it as the entrance is so discreet. No signage really, and a door which is tucked away from the road, once you know where it is, it feels like you've been let in on an amazing secret. The front room is more like a coffee bar area with computers and books lying around. Enter next the outdoor courtyard with cover...Read More

Restaurant | "Organic Fare "Club" Restaurant"

During my last visit to Florence, I was invited to the opening day of a new restaurant in town that specializes in "biological" (organic) food. Cibarius is officially a "circolo culturale" which is a type of cultural association very common in Italy. The main difference comes down to tax brackets, but although these "club restaurants" sound exclusive, mostly they just require a small fee to be paid to become a "member" at the door. Cibarius was selling memberships for 5 euros.Located on Via de' Pucci, just a couple blocks from the Duomo, Cibarius is located on a lower level, and so the entrance is a bit inconspicuous as an opening with a staircase leading to the main dining room door. 5 E Cinque

Restaurant | "Natural Food Lunch Place"

Another newer restaurant that was established since my previous visits to Florence, that I was able to visit during my last trip there was the natural food cafe of "5 e Cinque". A friend introduced me to this cute cafe which is located in one of my favorite tiny squares in the Oltrarno neighborhood of Florence, the Piazza della Passera. 5 e Cinque has such a well-designed, minimalist feel to it, and tends to fill up with a lunch crowd, so be sure to grab one of the handful of tables in the small dining room. Specializing in natural and healthful fare, this restaurant features a small and seasonal menu with very simple dishes, many which are vegetarian-friendly. I dined there a ...Read More

Restaurant | "A Retreat for Time-Wasters"

Il Ristoro is not exactly a vegetarian restaurant, but there was always a couple choices on the menu that were vegetarian-friendly...and the atmosphere of this place was so cozy that I felt like including it on my list. Among my friends in Florence, it was referred to many times as the "salad place" and it definitely had some amazing, healthful salads for the herbivore and omnivore alike.Il Ristoro dei Perditempo (aka Il Ristoro 48A or simply, Il Ristoro) really means the "retreat of time wasters" and once you visit it's easy to see how this could be true. Located in the Oltrarno area of Florence (the area just across the Arno River from most of the tourist sites), and just down Borgo San ...Read More
