I have been to San Diego several times for conventions and conferences but the last two times, I've stayed here at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites in the downtown area of the city. It did not disappoint on this visit.Gaslamp Plaza Suites is actually a timeshare resort, available to those who have purchased here or used an exchange network like RCI or II to trade into this location. It is also available through their property management company VRI, which is how I booked my four night stay. At $113+ tax/night for a queen suite, it was a bargain when compared to other hotels in the block with the conference I was attending (starting at $155+tax/night).The queen suite was a large suit...Read More

On our first night in San Diego, my sister and I went out for a couple of beers before dinner because we were too early for dining. We walked a couple of blocks from the timeshare resort to the Beer Company. It was a bit confusing as we thought the name of the place was Karl Strauss but I have since realized that was merely the name of the main brew they serve.Because it was happy hour, we enjoyed a couple of $3 pints of their Strauss amber which was very good. They had a pretty decent assortment of locally brewed micro-brews along with a vast selection of bottled beers. While there enjoying our beers, we saw them preparing pizzas back in the stone ovens. The pizzas served a...Read More

I was a bit skeptical when the front desk clerk suggested Brian's 24 "Bar & Grill" for breakfast on my last morning in town. A bit tired of the continental breakfast, I really wanted a good meal since I would be flying home and not sure what food I will be able to get during my travels. My concerns were quickly calmed as I saw plates of huge meals pass by me.The menu was expansive; two full pages of pretty much single spaced choices. Do we really need four egg omelets or nine inch pancakes? Because of the huge portion sizes, I chose the eggs and sausage with biscuit. Even that proved to be too much food for one sitting, when you consider the added potatoes and fruit slices....Read More

The Melting Pot- Gaslamp Quarter

There is a Melting Pot Restaurant in the Milwaukee Area and several of my friends have been there and raved about the experience. I was prepared for what has been described as a pricey dining event, what I wasn't prepared for was the overwhelming options. As the name implies, "melting pot" is all about the fondue experience. It was funny, because growing up, fondue was a family dining event at home back in the 70's.My sister and I were greeted and seated promptly, and subsequently attended to by our server (and guide) Josh. Having had a couple of beers up the street, we opted for ice water to drink. They did, however, have a full bar providing beer, wine and mixed drinks to those who...Read More

Looking for something close to the convention center, the Old Spaghetti Factory fit the bill perfectly as it is located about two or three blocks into the Gaslamp Quarter.Arriving around 1:30p, it appeared they were at the tail-end of their lunch business so I was immediately seated. With a soft drink ordered, I looked through the menu and decided that I would eat my "large meal" of the day for lunch and then have something light for supper.I ordered the angel hair pasta with meatballs (2) which also came with soup of the day or a house salad with choice of dressing and a freshly baked mini loaf of sourdough bread.Recognizing that it is difficult to mess up pasta, ...Read More
