If you are looking for a bite to eat before or after a show then you can try Wet Willies, Mattie’s Dinner, and the Black Bear Restaurant. They have 3 clubs with Butter, Halo and The Country Saloon. They also have the premier event venue at the Music Factory Front Stage. Like I said in my review of the Statesville Balloon Rally, our intention was to get there for mass ascension, take a break and get dinner and come back for balloon glow. Things didn’t quite work out like that though. We ended up going to dinner afterwards and we were starving. I picked Almafi’s for 2 reasons. 1. It was close by which worked into our original plans. 2. We were hoping this was connected to our favorite pizza place, Almafi’s in Charlotte. After finally getting out of the parking lot we made our way to the highway and headed for Almafi’s. There are 2 Almafi’s and we went to the one on Venture Blvd. Off exit 180. We pull into the strip mall and find the ...Read More

I love any reason to go to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, but when I saw butterflies would be added to the Orchard Conservatory, I knew I had to stop by. The garden was started by retired textile manufactory, Daniel Stowe. It is located in Belmont NC just outside of Gastonia. The magnificent gardens sit on 380 acres. Currently 110 acres are being used with plans for the remaining acres to be developed over the following years. HGTV named them as one of the best 20 gardens and USA Today said it was one of the best places to welcome fall with a flourish. Since 2008, the Orchard Conservatory has been regions the only public conservatory devoted to tropical plan...Read More

There are a few things to keep in mind. 1. Order tickets in advanced. They are cheaper and in the past the booklets that come with the tickets have been gone by tour day. 2. Wear comfortable shoes and preferably ones that can be removed easily. Most of the homes have hardwood floors and you have to wear the little booties inside and most of the time you will not be allowed to wear stiletto heels. Also there is a lot of walking involved. 3. If you have a baby with you, strollers are not allowed. 4. Bring your cameras. You can not take pictures inside (unless the owners say it is OK) but you can take plenty outside and sometimes inside when it is a public building owned by ...Read More

This year marked the 35th anniversary of the tour of homes that highlights the cities grand historic homes. Statesville boasts the second largest historic in the country with 11 including Spencer. There are a total of 1204 historical commercial buildings and residential homes. Only Savannah GA has more with 13. For me it was my 5th year attending. It is a major event for me and that weekend is always planned for well in advanced and I always make sure I am in town for it. This year there were 7 private homes, the Hall House, and one commercial building owned by the society on the tour. Several had been on the tour before. I have no idea why there are so many repeats given all the beautiful...Read More
