...it's actually my 12th great-grandfather's church, though you don't have to be a history geek or a descendant to enjoy the oldest continually operating place of worship in the country.Founded in 1635 by the Reverend Peter Hobart, the original congregation consisted mostly of migrants from Hingham, England. The Rev. Hobart, known for his especially Presbyterian slant, had his choice of several congregations, but settled in Hingham with his old friends and family. He was a controversial old coot, banned from preaching in Boston, and known to speak his mind whether his opinion was popular or not.The meetinghouse, as it now stands, was started in 1681, and featured a Gothic, Ha...Read More

Before I left for the east coast, a friend said to me, "You've gotta have the LAHbstah while you're theah...LABstahs as big as youeh AHM!" he exclaimed with placing his right hand at the crook of his left arm to show me exactly how big the LAHbstahs were. I kept this in mind as I roamed the Massachusetts coast. I had never had a LAHBstah as big as my arm, and this would be something fun to write home about. My host in Plymouth suggested I hit the Lobster Hut, a local landmark that sits at the end of Plymouth Harbor. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I wasn't looking for fancy. I was looking for an 18 inch lobster. I entered, and then took a moment to figure ou...Read More

As I stated in my intro to this journal, I am a history buff. When I prepare for a trip, I read a lot, research more, and read up on it again. Having never been to New England, I was over-the-top with excitement to see the infamous Plymouth Rock. So imagine my chagrin to find out that, A) it has suffered two major breaks in its history, and B) it isn't all that big.Think about it: It is an American icon--the stepping stone of democracy, the footfall of the birth of a nation. In my mind, it was a grand boulder, rising above the crashing Massachusetts waves as a signal to all comers that greatness was afoot. In reality, it is rather small, perhaps 24 inches across. It hardly...Read More

By the Sea Bed and Breakfast, located across the street from Plymouth Harbor in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is probably the most charming and affordable accommodation in the area.Originally, we wanted to stay in Boston proper on this trip, but the fall rates started at $400 a night, and the one hotel we found in our price range (under $200 per night), had such horrible reviews we were scared to give it a try. After a lot of research, we decided to stay in Plymouth and take the train into Boston. It was one of the smartest things we did on the whole trip. When we arrived at the huge, historic home faced with a bounty of colorful flowers and a wrap-around porch, I swear we were gre...Read More

Attraction | "The Commons is anything but common"

Boston Common is more than just a park. This 50 acre site, centrally located in Boston, was once the community grazing ground for cattle, a place for public hangings, and the campsite of British troops at the start of the Revolutionary war. These days it is a place to walk, rest, picnic, and start the city's historical foot tour, the Freedom Trail. In this city, a car is more of a nuisance than a conveniance. The excellent public transit system is fast and affordable, and getting to the park is a simple matter of hopping a train on the green line and getting off on Park Street. A visitor information center, operated by The Freedom Tr...Read More
