Massanutten Resort was developed back in the 70's, and it has become a four season resort - any time of the year you can pick from an overwhelming variety of activities. There are more than 1300 timeshare units, and over a thousand single family homes. The resort is located on Massanutten Peak in McGaheysville VA, 10 miles east of Harrisonburg.

Unfortunately for us, we chose to arrive in the middle of a snowstorm! It took us 3 hours to drive from Charlottesville to the resort, normally just a little over an hour. After a very scary and slippery ride up the mountain in the dark, and with the help of a great maintenance crew (who shoveled our steps so we could get down them) we got the car unpacked and got inside out of the weather. It didn't stop snowing until after 9 pm on Saturday night! We were lucky that we stopped at our favorite pizza restaurant and at the store before we arrived. We ended up with 18" of snow by the time it stopped. The resort definitely didn't need to make snow that week! Once it stopped, the crews were out cleaning the roads, just needed to watch out for icy patches early in the morning and late at night. We had a wonderful Christmas vacation, and look forward to our trip next year!

Our favorite memory from this trip was the wildlife! We stayed in the Mountainside Villas, and were lucky enough to have a herd of deer living in the fallen trees behing our townhome. They came out in the snow looking for food, and came up to within a foot or two of me. Very tame; fortunately for them they are protected and hunting is only allowed in certain areas. Our townhome could sleep 8 comfortably with two bedrooms, two pullout couches, two bathrooms, and a neat fireplace. My only complaint would have to be all the stairs outside to get to your unit, it could be a problem for some people. Located just 16 miles from Massanutten, is a great place to go shopping and stock up. A variety of shops will provide you with just about anything you need to buy. There's a bookstore, a restaurant, and food specialty shops. You can buy bulk meats and cheeses, baked goods, and jerkey. There is a meat market where you can get fresh cut poultry, seafood, hams, and deli meats; a bakeshop with breads, pies, cookies, and cakes. There are craft collectibles, and take out sandwiches, salads, and BBQ. Don't forget to stop by the Amish booth and have a fresh pretzel!

Restaurant | "The Best Pizza"

We always stop here, whether we are visiting Charlottesville or just passing through. This location is next to the Red Roof Inn, near UVA college. Good thing we stocked up - we were stranded for the next 24 hours in our condo in a snowstorm! Mellow Mushroom uses spring water in it's dough, and this makes the pizza very unique and tasty! Prices depend on the number of toppings and the size - $6 up to $20. Pretzels come in parmesan and salted, $3.95 for 3 or $6.35 for 6. They also have calzones, soups, hoagies, and a variety of specialty pizzas and salads.

Of course, you go to Massanutten in the winter for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing! Massanutten was the first resort to have a quad chairlift, increasing the number of guests getting time on the mountain. At night they light all 14 trails for night skiing, and you can see the lights from down in McGaheysville!My niece and nephews participated in the Slope Sliders program. Ski ages are 4 - 12, and snowboard ages are 7 - 12. After a great dinner, we hit the Arcade! It had video games, and those games you play to win tickets, which you cash in later for a prize. You can participate in tournaments - bowling, basketball, air hockey, and dancing. A water park ticket isn't necessary to get in the arcade - this makes it a great place to go on Tuesday or Wednesday when the waterpark is closed. The All You Can Play Special is valid on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 am - 4 pm and costs $9; it's only for video games.

Blue Ridge Buffet

We had a great family dinner at this restaurant. It's located on the top floor of the waterpark. The glass windows provided a view into the waterpark and of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We ate there on Friday; along with Saturday and Sunday, an extensive buffet is served. We had pasta, soups, carved meats, crab legs, and steaks; on Saturday the buffet includes shrimp and prime rib. You can also order off the menu. On Monday and Thursday there is no buffet.

Blue Ridge Buffet is open from 4 pm - 9 pm on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday; open from 4 pm - 10 pm on Friday and Saturday.

What better place to be when the temperature outside is a balmy 20 degrees! The water at the Waterpark is 84 degrees all year long. There is something here for all ages. The little ones in our group headed for the Frog Pond, a 12" deep pool; the older ones decided to tackle the Flowrider to practice their surfing.
