Avoiding the cows and the bears, East Glacier is a wonderful area for strolling after a long day in the park. There are ample stops in town for ice cream, that t-shirt of the park, and local craftspeople. There is no end to the food choices in town, from Mexican to BBQ, to dining in a restored train depot just out of town. Accommodation ranges from an AYH Hostel, to motels, to the upper end Glacier Park Lodge. I found my room at www.glacierinfo.com

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The Amtrak train arrives daily, and there are rental cars available from Dollar during the summer.

Hotel

Our room was a comfortable cabin with cable TV, bathroom with a shower, and a good firm mattress. The owners were friendly and not only picked us up from the train depot, but were most helpful in planning our trip and were also the Dollar Rental car agency in town. The property was very clean and quiet, we have not slept that well in a long time! They also had a gas station and a well stocked gift shop so it was a one stop shop so to speak. Food is close by at "Brownies" and the "Whistle Stop" across the street.

Restaurant

The Whistle Stop was recommended to us by our motel (Sears) for breakfast and it was a great find. We ordered the huckleberry stuffed french toast which was to die for! Thick bread with a creamy filling, covered with local huckleberries! My mom ordered one of their omelets; a Spanish-filled with chorizo, spinach, sour cream, salsa, and topped with cheese, with fruit and homemade toast. For around $5 each we were stuffed until dinner...

At night they serve chicken, bbq ribs, trout, and even a mushroom burger. If we go back it will be on our list of must do places to eat again!

Restaurant

The best dining in the Glacier area. Although it is located 12 miles west of town, the setting is fabulous. It is actually the old Great Northern rail depot with a wonderful view of the mountains; especially at sunset. The food is very artfully done, hearty steaks smothered in peppers or sauces, huge bowls of soup presented in a bread bowl; (my split pea was enough for a meal in itself). Roasted vegatables and a potato rounded out a great meal, but I wish I had left room for dessert!

Located across from the Sears Motel on Hwy 49 is a little store called the Spiral Spoon and a woodcarver named Jo Wagner. Jo is full of Y'all! Being from Georgia she is the essence of homespun personality; hollerin at the folks wandering by from he chair on the front porch to come on in and look around. Her specialty is hand carving "spiral spoons", spoons made of wood with every type of top, goats, apples, you name it. There are many other items in her shop from other local carvers as well, but Jo is the show and everyone seems to leave with a bag and a smile.
