Here is an out of October mid-level wine festival near Lynchburg that you will want to mark on your calendar. One of the last Fall wine festivals, The 2d Annual Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival, will be on the Saturday before Thanksgiving at Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home from 11am-5pm November 20, 2010. Popular Forest is a National Historic site and one of only two homes that Jefferson designed and built for his own use and remains an outstanding example of his architectural genius and his talent for landscaping. With construction started in 1806, Poplar Forest was a private retreat far from public scrutiny for President Jefferson after age 65. This was where he could indu...Read More

Having been surrounded by the wine culture of Northern California’s Bay Area before moving to sourthern Virginia, I was very surprised to find the wine culture alive and well here in the Mid Atlantic region. Actually, Virginia is currently in the stage of vineyard growth because of several factors that would have had Thomas Jefferson smiling if he was around today. With over 160 wineries now dotting the map heavily in the center of the Commonwealth, it would be hard not to find something that you like amongst the varieties offered. It was over 400 years ago that English settlers in Virginia hoped to establish a flourishing wine industry at Jamestown and become a source of wine for the British hom...Read More

October is wine month in Virginia, and the place to plan on going is to the Virginia Wine Festival at Norfolk. The annual Virginia Wine Festival at Norfolk's Town Point Park is definitely an impressive event with a usual turnout in the thousands when the weather is good. Town Point Park is the park located next to the battleship on Waterside Road on the Elizabeth River harbor in downtown Norfolk. This is one of the largest wine festivals in the Commonwealth, and probably the one where you will find most of big and small vineyards and wineries participating. Entrance to the wine festival is $35 dollars on Saturday and $30 on Sunday for those that want to do wine tasting. Purchasing your ti...Read More

One of the fun smaller wine festivals is the Colonial Italian Wine Festival held in Williamsburg over a weekend in the beginning of October. This is not so much a festival of Italians wines as it is of Virginia wines and Italian foods and crafts. The festival is one where you pay the $15 wine tasting fee at the entrance and get a wine glass. We also found out that there is a significant military discount for both military and spouses. This was much appreciated in their doing that for the military by both the Army and Navy folks in our small group.CIAO was formed in 1988 as a social club for Italian-Americans to enjoy cultural and educational presentations and items, and in 1989 CIAO began ...Read More
