We were only spending a couple of days in Toronto, Canada's largest city. We arrived on Saturday and got to the Strathcona Hotel after 9 p.m. Tired from traveling (he from England and me from Nova Scotia), we just ordered room service and got some rest. Sunday was a low key day. We met some friends for brunch in the hotel and then went to a pub for the afternoon, meeting up with a group of about 30 friends. It was a lovely chance to catch up and relax. When we left there, we caught the subway down Yonge Street, and walked along the busy part of Toronto though Dundas Square (Toronto's answer to Times Square) and downtown where the skyscrapers got taller and taller. A coffee stop to sustain ...Read More

On the second day of our visit to Toronto, we rented a car from Enterprise (there's an office on Simcoe Place, just down from Union Station) and planned to drive to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake for the day. And it was raining. Hard. But since we had the car already reserved we went anyway. We picked up the Gardiner Expressway and it takes you all the way down, along the lake to Niagara. We thought about going to Niagara-on-the-Lake first but missed the turn so went to the Falls first. It was not raining much by then. There's a large parking lot across from the main visitor centre and it will cost you $18 to park. That's high but you can leave it there all day if you plan to go around to all t...Read More

I've stayed at the Strathcona Hotel once before but i don't remember much about that stay other than it didn't leave a negative or overly positive impression. I guess it was just fine. This time, the rates we got of Travelocity were attractive enough to jump at it. The room we booked was a "superior queen", one up from the basic room and it was fine. The room was clean, not overly large but large enough for two. There's a sort of bench type seat along one side of the bed and a bedside table on the other. There's a desk in the corner and a closet with space for your suitcase and the bathroom is small but not cramped. We found the mattress a bit hard but oddly we weren't that stiff in the morning. Beds...Read More

The CN Tower is one of the "must do" attractions in Toronto. Yes, it's probably also a tourist trap and it's not cheap, but most major attractions aren't cheap and some are still worth doing. This is one of them. The basic visit will cost an adult about $25 to go up to the observation deck. You can look out from inside or go outside on the deck which is caged in and get a 360 view. The view from inside is nearly that and if it's windy, which it probably will be, you might want to stay inside. Besides, because of the caging, you won't get good photos from outside anyway. The outside deck and the glass floor looking down hundreds of feet to the plaza below are on one level and the inside obs...Read More

The Kensington Market is more than a market, it's a funky neighbourhood in Toronto. The main "drag" is Kensington Avenue but it's actually a few blocks of shops, markets, cafes, bakeries within the perimeters of Dundas Street W, Spadina Ave, College St. and Bathurst St. Kensington and Augusta are the main streets with several cross streets making up the bulk of the shops, many of which are in old houses. There are a lot of vintage clothing and jewelry shops and we also saw craft shops and costume shops, bakeries, and fruit and Veg stands. There are bright murals on buildings and there are racks of clothes and bright fabrics, lanterns and flags outside many of the shops. It makes for a very colourful n...Read More

C'est What is a brew pub in Toronto. It's only a couple of blocks east of Union Station. They serve nothing but craft and micro brewed beers. There's no commercial brands such as Molson or Labatt's here and it's all the better for it. The beer even has it's own menu and you can pick and choose or ask for recommendations. They also have a good selection of whiskeys and a great wine list. It's below street level and the building is over 100 years old. The pub/restaurant has old stone walls and a low ceiling. There are wooden tables and chairs and also some comfortable couches around an electric fireplace. There's a separate room for games, such as pool and board games, too. While we only wen...Read More
