When i was in Philadelphia there was one area that really struck a personal chord with me and I only found it by accident so ive got to really share this treasure as the Orlons sang in the sixties "Where do all the hippies meet? South Street".I was on a long day of touring in Philadelphia and after seeing the Liberty Bell, Franklins grave and Independence Hall i made my way to Penns landing, the final stop on my tour. As i saw the entrance to Penns landing i saw the neon signs for South Street. As it was approaching dusk i rushed for a quick series of photos of Penn's landing and made my way back to South Street, ready to sit down for a few drinks and something to eat and to rest my bliste...Read More

There are free guided tours of the Independence Hall which you have to pick up from the Visitors centre an hour in advance. What is good is that the tickets are free, but you can also book online to reserve at www.recreation.gov, or the visitors centre own website. There is a $1.50 charge, but when you see the long line of people waiting you will be glad that you reserved them as you dont have to wait around. Luckily i did this tour with a city dweller friend from Philadelphia, who was able to tell me to do this in advance.I found it amazing, taking photos, walking around and taking photos of the grounds and the Liberty Bell. Also to see Benjamin Franklins gravestone. There is so much to d...Read More

Betsy Ross House

Attraction | "The maker of the great USA flag"

Betsy Ross house is a hidden treasure in Philadelphia. As an ignorant tourist i wanted to see the Rocky Steps and the Liberty Bells and had no knowledge of Betsy Ross or who she was. I was brought here on a guided walking tour and if i ever returned i would do it again. It is amazing how there are contrasts in Philadelphia. On one hand there is the newly constructed tall buildings and on the other hand there are the cobbled streets. Betsy Ross house is near the beginning of these cobbled streets on the famous Arch street. It is slap bang in the city centre and you can get here from the greyhound station or 30th street station quite easily on foot within 5 minutes. The house was built 250 ye...Read More

The building is open year round, though hours vary by season. inside the centre there is a video presentation and exhibits on display about the Liberty Bell, focusing on its origins and its modern day role as an international icon of freedom. Taped presentations about the history of the Liberty Bell are given in different languages. for the convenience of foreign visitors. I feel that i should share a tip of mine on how to travel cheaply to and from Philadelphia and the surrounding area as there are some great tips on how to save money and how to travel long distances without getting an expensive flight or train. From New York City Port Authority there is a lot of buses, in fact its the biggest bus station in america apparently and maybe also the world. If you were to turn up at the last minute and buy a single ticket to Philadelphia it would cost you up to $50 for the two and a half hour journey. Amtrak can cost you around $80 for an immediate ticket for a quick train journey. Below are some tips with companies that can get you to and from Philadelphia for a low s...Read More

Rocky Statue and the Rocky Steps

I wanted to go to the Philadelphia museum of art, not to see the huge treasures and great paintings but to run up the steps like Rocky. The museum houses many interesting pieces of art and sculpture such as Picasso and holds several expeditions each year. The museum staff are friendly and helpful and you can spend a lot of time in there. Also the museum houses encyclopedic holdings of costume and textiles, as well as prints, drawings, and photographs that are displayed in rotation for reasons of preservation. There is a great amount of american history to be viewed in this museum, however this is not the main reason people who come to Phili want to come here. The Rocky films fa...Read More

Attraction | "A great racetrack"

Seems like im the first person to review this great attraction. Philadelphia Park racetrack is world famous and people can watch its races all throughout america and the UK. It is situated in Bensalem, Philadelphia and although it is a great drive from the city centre, it is still connected with buses to and from the city centre. You can get an all day ticket from around $7 which allows you to get on the bus as much as you want. Although if you are using public transport i think the last bus leaves around 10 pm so it is probably advisable not to visit at night. The racetrack is situated in the outskirts of Philadelphia and you pass a great big casino in the grounds. The building is splendourous a...Read More

Penn's Landing

Attraction | "One of the most awesome sights in Phili"

Penn's Landing Photo, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Quote:
Penns landing is one of the most famous things in America let alone Philadelphia. It is a pleasant walk from the main city centre. Philadelphia has a great subway and bus service, though for safety reasons i would recommend taking the subway through the day. Unlike a lot of other USA cities Philadelphia is quite a pedestrian city and the inhabitants use their public transport services too. If youre on the subway get yourself to 30th street station get a map from the tourist board and youre all set. The public transport system is cheap with a single ticket costing just over a dollar and fantastic transport links throughout the city, i really cant praise this city enough for its great public transport....Read More
