Hotel | "The place to stay, before you go!"

Last month I was flying out from London Heathrow airport for the first time, and considering I live a 5 ½ hour car journey away combined with a morning flight, it was already pretty much a done decision that we would need a hotel the night before. There's a whole choice of hotels to choose from situated near Heathrow airport, and in the end I got a good deal booking through Holiday Extras. For an over night’s stay and 6 days parking in a 'mystery hotel' it would only cost £80, and after carefully reading the basic description about the mystery hotel and doing a quick google search, I worked out it was the Holiday Inn Heathrow M4, Jct 4. After booking it my guess was confirmed, and I was all set to ...Read More

Top of the Rock is an observation deck covering three floors at the top of the Rockefeller Center. It boasts great views of the city, including a view of the Empire State Building, and is also well known for shorter queues than the aforementioned. After carefully planning my recent trip to New York, my mind was made up that I’d much rather go up to Top of the Rock than the alternative, the Empire State Building. The main reasons being a shorter queue (and I didn’t fancy spending an hour or two waiting to go up the Empire State Building!) and also Top of the Rock offers good views of the city including being able to view the Empire State Building itself, which you can’t see if you’re on that observat...Read More

Attraction | "Tourist Trap Square"

On my trip to New York I must admit Times Square wasn't too high on my list of the places I was going to visit, and this was mainly because I did quite a bit of research before my trip and I knew it was a place that was going to be chuck full of tourists. This doesn't mean however that I wasn't going to give it a miss altogether, I mean how could I? Times Square is one of the most famous squares in the world (has anyone seen those rice krispie square adverts recently?) and I had to admit to myself that I did want to go and see those pretty lights.Times Square is an intersection at the junction of Broadway and 7th Avenue. It has a huge number of flashy LED lights, mostly adverts, and my ...Read More

When I went to New York this year, we were in firm agreement that visiting the Statue of Liberty was going to be on our itinerary. It’s a famous land mark and something that symbolises the USA, not just New York. The statue was a gift to the US from France, and it is an iconic symbol of not only freedom, but also the USA. It was our first time in New York and something you have to do at least once, and we decided to go all out and book tickets to go up to the crown whilst we were there, as we were only planning on doing this the once. After the September 11 attacks in 2001, the statue was closed, and the pedestal didn’t re-open until 2004, and the statue itself until 2009. There are limits o...Read More

Attraction | "Walking the Brooklyn Bridge"

Before I went to New York, a visit to the famous Brooklyn Bridge was already planned in my itinerary. Completed in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge connects Brooklyn to Manhattan and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. I read about the history of the bridge in my guide books, and it certainly has an interesting past. Building it caused problems, such as the well known fact of the workers who suffered from Compression Sickness from working in the caissons, and an week after it opened, a rumour that the bridge was going to collapse caused a huge stampede in which at least 12 people died. I was eager to visit the bridge and walk across it, enjoying the views of Manhattan...Read More
